Manufacturer's Description
MHL is the new one port connection solution standard for the mobile market. With just a single microUSB connection on your HTC device you can stream audio and video as well as charging and sending data.
The HTC MHL AC M490 (microUSB - HDMI) Cable can be used to connect to an HDMI enabled TV or other monitor / screen and "mirror" what is on your screen in real time. This means playback of stored or recorded content and games all without the need for an extra port on your smartphone. Also if your television supports MHL enabled HDMI connections, then you can charge your HTC Sensation when connected and control the Sensation using the television remote.

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

When working, this device is great for feeding your HD photos and videos from your HTC Sensation or Samsung Galaxy S to your TV. However, it has an annoying habit of disconnecting during use as the connectors were never designed for this kind of application. Also, please note that the HDMI cable as portrayed in the picture is in reality considerably shorter in length and is only suitable if you are right next to the TV.
The unit comprises a 3" cable terminated with a mini right-angled HDMI plug which connects to the 'phone (in my case an HTC Sensation), the other end of which disappears into one edge of a small box about 1.5" x 1.25" x 0.33". The opposite edge of the box is fitted with two sockets : a mini HDMI and a standard HDMI. A 4' standard HDMI cable is supplied for the latter to provide content to your television, but the unit will not work unless also powered via the mini HDMI socket. This requires the use of the original power lead supplied with your 'phone. Needless to say a USB/mains adapter or a powered up computer USB socket is also required. Quite why all the necessary conmponents couldn't be included is a mystery, although I suppose it is fair to asume that people will already have a power lead. In my case though it was a nuisance, as my original lead runs from a desktop 'phone cradle under my desk and into the back of my PC, so unplugging and replugging is a hassle, causing me to buy a second power lead at extra cost (c. £4).
In use transmission quality seems to be fine and certainly up to standard TV quality, although I am not sure whether it is capable of full HD. I suspect that it runs to 720i rather than 1080i, but for a 'phone output, that's more than adequate; how many HD films does anyone store on a 'phone anyway?
When it is necessary to view 'phone content on your television, this adapter (plus your existing 'phone power lead, etc), does the job capably, but the mess of cables makes it an untidy necessity. And as pin 18 on an HDMI connector is a +5V supply, I don't see why the unit couldn't have been 'self-powered', saving half the cabling and hassle. Perhaps the load is too high if it is also charging the 'phone?
I have given a four star rating overall as the unit works well (despite the mess of cabling). I am slightly annoyed though that a £20 item actually cost me £24 due to the lack of a power lead being supplied.
I picked this up as I couldn't bring myself to spend the £80 on the wireless version. Sometimes you just can't beat a cable.
It actually came in handy the other night when I went over to a friend's house. His DVD player had packed in, so I put a video file on my phone and took the cable. I would recommend using a mains wall charger to power this adapter, as the HTC One X requires a little more power than a 500mA USB output can deliver to stop battery level decreasing during playback.
The picture was decent and we watched the whole film without any issue. The only thing I'd say is that make sure you take your phone (especially if it is the HTC One X) out of any cases before watching a whole film. We got to the end of the film and I noticed the LED on the phone was blinking red & green; the notification for over-heating. The phone was roasting hot. The next time I do this I will take the case off and perhaps make sure the phone is propped up so air can get to the underside of the phone.
Trier this on my new Pano GT30. Started out by just connecting the adapter and supplied cable to hdmi, got nothing. Then figured out that you had to use the micro USB, nothing, had to use the mains adapter in the end, just to get video, that came and went, if moved the slightest. But then no HD audio through my amp. In a word - useless. Plus HTC support useless too, just told me audio not supported. Save your money
Looked that it would do the job it was sold to do but once it was plugged in it opened up maps on the phone. It did not do what it was sold to do which left a very disappointed mother on christmas morning.

Have ordered this product twice now and been on the phone twice to find out the product is the cable ONLY.
Going on the picture, the reviews and what's in the product description it comes with the HTC adapter box. This is not actually the case and if you look in the bottom of the product description there's a tab that says"read full description"when clicked on it pops up in the middle of the original description what the box contains(which is the cable only).
I think this page is totally misleading and is not as it states a microUSB - HDMI it is HDMI - HDMI. I have just wasted three months on this product as the first took TWO months to arrive and the cable only issue should have been explained in the first phone call i made.
If only the 15 letters or so of what the box contains was in the original description and not hidden away in a seperate tab i would not have even considered this product.
