With these things in mind, I went for the HP Touchpad and am very confident I made the right choice. Even better, when I came to buy it on Amazon it was about 40% cheaper than the iPad! My husband is absolutely thrilled with it, and has rarely been without it since receiving it. The great thing about it is when you turn it on it comes to life instantly, no waiting around for things to load up, you can be on the internet within one second of switching it on. The games you can download are great, the picture quality and graphics are seriously impressive.
Overall I think this tablet was superb value for money.
As soon as it came I tinkered about with the web os side before attempting to install android, which was a nerve wracking experience but very worthwhile and there were numerous forums and youtube explaining the details to set it up.
I have had it now for a numerous years and like it so much that I bought one for my mother who adores it. It's very simple to use and has clear instructions. The 16gb storage is adequate for me, as I have stored most of my ebooks and music on my phones. It is also quite robust as I have dropped it a few times and it still works perfectly. I'm so glad that I invested in this wonderful piece of kit.
The only drawback I have found is the chargers do not seem to last long at all. I have had quite a few from HP and they don't seem to be well made, so I have ended up using my phone charger instead and that works perfectly. Do not let the battery run completely down as it struggles to charge and power up and if that happens, just leave it on the charger for a good couple of hours and that should sort it out.
The battery does last a few hours with full brightness and videos playing so I only have to charge it once of twice a day.
The TouchPad once updgraded to it's latest operating system (3.0.2) is an awesome device, nice and fast, real multitasking and has a very good homebrew community (google Pre Central, I have already overclocked my device to 1.5ghz). The app store is relatively small, but it contains many of the big name games and all the apps I have downloaded so far are high quality and have not felt dissapointed. The Facebook app and Email app are awesome.
This is the perfect tablet for someone not looking to shell out £400 to browse the web comfortably, and the synergy of the system allows you to import all your contacts from gmail, hotmail, yahoo, facebook, linkedin etc. and automatically combines contacts that are in all the other places (so you dont get 4 contact entries because they ar ein hotmail, gmail, and facebook etc.)
There are a lot of reviews here for 1 star, but they are complaining about Amazon prices etc instead of reviewing the actual item itself. And please be aware that HP has stopped supporting the TouchPad hardware NOT the software, which means you will still see operating system updates and new apps in the catalogue. (Love the pivot magazine system they have for the app store)
HD screen, dual-core processor for a bargain price.
Up-to-date version of WebOS is better, in my opinion, than Android (and I do love Android!). Multitasking is much better than Android.
A very active community: Preware is fantastic, and, in fact I would say necessary to make this device useable.
Future proofing in the form of Android and Linux ports. You have to know what you are doing, but with a bit of work this could be a fantastic Android slate.
The WebOS version of the app store is like a magazine with professional reviews and intros to various different apps - I love the format, if only there were more apps to choose from!
The WebOS facebook app - in particular the way it handles photos - is superb.
Calendar and email are well handled and versatile - this makes a great business slate.
OK, here are the negatives - this is not a tablet to buy if you want something that will be superb right out of the box. It takes a bit of work, and a bit of tech-savvy to get the most out of this. The app store is obviously limited and not likely to improve dramatically in the future, and the initial install of WebOS is juddery to say the least. You will need to get Preware, overclock the processor to 1.5ghz and get hold of a USA version of Kindle app. Finally, I miss evernote. No, I really miss evernote..
All in all, well worth the money.
