To start with, the setup was so quick and simple (unlike my old Canon). I simply plugged the printer in to the mains and followed a couple of instructions. It sorted itself out and that was that. It immediately became visible to my phone and iPad for Airprint, which work without any problem.
My computer is a MacBook Air, which found the printer (under System Preferences->Printers and Scanners) without having to install any extra drivers or anything.
The next thing you are invited to do is to sign up for 'Instant Ink'. Basically, if you pay a monthly subscription (ranging from £1.99 to £7.99) your printer automatically orders more ink so that it has arrived before you run out. Initially I was sceptical about the cost, but the basic package costs £24 per year - which is the cost of one spare set of cartridges if you get them from the supermarket, and it allows you to print 50 pages per month. If you use more, its £1 for 10 extra sheets. If you use less, you can carry over the remaining ones and use them next month. So it does seem more economical, and means I won't do what I always do where I run out of ink and have to run around to a neighbours to print something urgently. Even better, you get four months for free, and when you sign up, if you enter the codes 'freeink' and 'jLWFF', you get another 2 months free - making it up to 6. The best thing is that for these 6 free months, regardless of which plan you subscribed to, you are allowed 300 pages per month for free. Thats quite a lot of free ink. You enter your card details when you sign up, and you can cancel or change price plans at any time.
When the ink arrives, it comes with a free post envelope to return old cartridges so they can be recycled. Again, seems really good.
The printer is pretty quick for an inkjet, and the resolution seems really good. Amazingly, it is able to do double sided printing, which is great for this price. Photocopying is straightforward, the only downside is that you have to do one sheet at a time and if you want double sided, you have to flip over the original on the scanner. For this price, a feed in tray seems a little optimistic anyway, so I can't really criticise it.
The printer does everything wirelessly, and whilst you could use a USB connection if you wanted, the printer doesn't come with a USB cable. Again, hard to criticise, as I wires are really getting a bit dated, and if you're feeling nostalgic, you can use the one from your previous printer.
The unit is really slim and sleek looking in matt black with gloss black trim. Paper is held internally (up to 100 sheets) so it doesn't end up folded over or dusty if not used for a while. The coolest thing about it is that when it starts printing, it automatically extends a little arm to catch the paper. I am also really pleased with the way the power switches on and off. The printer will go into a power saving mode if left for 5 minutes. Printing something will automatically wake it up again, so you don't have to run around the house to switch it on first. Our computer desk has a timer socket which switches everything off overnight. Pleasingly, when the power comes back on in the morning, it switches itself back on and is ready to go again.
Overall, this printer is amazing for the price. Unless you really need a fax machine and a document feed-in tray, I can't see anything better than this for under £100. And to top it off, the instant ink system is great.
I'm sure its a good printer if these issues are resolved.
I got my refund. This printer has just been increased in price. On 14th August 2017 it was just £34.99
Should always use 302XL cartridges to make sure you're not running out of ink soon.
Free instant ink trial
Good quality touchscreen for the price
Fast simplex print speed
Easy to set up
Can sometimes pick two sheets out of the paper tray rather than one
Can be noisy (although there is quiet mode) and my desk violently shakes while it is printing
Duplex printing can be slow as it includes time for the ink to dry
Paper tray has quite a small capacity (however this is to be expected in a small, household printer)
A little advice would be to install it through their website, and not through the CD it comes with, as it took me A LOT less time.
Moreover for those of you who want to use a cable to connect it to your devices, it is NOT included, so you would have to buy one separately, but you do not really need it as you can do everything through your wifi.
