I shall still use my A3 printer for my Photoshop & photographic printing, but it is a bit of a beast & has a pretty massive footprint compared to the 5520; so if space is at a premium then the 5520 is a good choice. Overall a very versatile, good quality product (I have always purchased HP printers) & for the price you can't go wrong.
Update 10/7 - it's worth mentioning that it is not possible to set up this printer to default to duplex printing from Android (only possible to do this in Windows on a PC), & this has been confirmed by HP Support. It will print duplex from Android, but you need to manually change the setting each time, which is not the ideal situation.
This printer has gone 10 years and is still alive and have reliable service throughout until recently where the print heads would clog up too often. They’d get cleaned and then clog up again in less than a month meaning it’s now time to fine a new one. After 10 years of service this printer’s gone above and beyond anything that was expected of it. Has worked well with Mac, iOS and Windows (can’t speak for Android, not printing happened from there) and did its job reliably. The printer actually works just fine, it’s just the print heads that are causing its retirement so if it wasn’t for that it would just keep going.
Update 1:
So when I reviewed this printer back in 2013, I had concerns over how long it would live (see below where I have the original review). However, it's been over three years now and the printer is still going strong and working just as well as it did on day one. The grinding noises have stopped and I can't really complain. It all works and for a cheap printer I bought and only really needed to last one year I'd say it's done a great job.
Offers high quality printing, e-print features, scanning, fax (I think, who uses fax these days anyway?) and wireless printing at a cheap price. Never (or rarely) have any issues with it (provided you use Windows. Mac doesn't always play nice)
Original review:
The quality of hardware is not. Severe grinding noises from the gears and no way to fix it (that I know off) Possibly meaning it's on borrowed time, and it's only 1 month old. Just feel like I've wasted money
One thing to note is that it does not come with a cable to connect it to the computer. It requires the user to connect via wifi. No problem if you're aiming for a wireless home but just wait until your broadband goes down, then you'll wish you had connected via cable! Of course the advantage of using wifi is that you can print not just from your computer but from many other devices as well such as laptops, smartphones etc. In theory you could print from the other side of the world if you connect the printer using wifi. Brilliant! Just make sure you don't get hacked. The Internet of Things is good and all but the amount of hacked Things is on the rise. Personally I have taken a more old school approach to setting up my printer and I use a cable (the one came with my old printer) and have the wifi turned off as I don't need it.
There is one little issue I have with this printer and it relates to the length of time it takes to actually print anything. The problem is this. When the print command is issued to the printer the printer goes through what appears to be a warm up routine. This warm up routine lasts around 30 seconds. It does this when it prints for the first time after coming out of stand by mode therefore increasing the time it takes to print the first page. This can sometimes be annoying particularly if you are only printing one page.
The printer has a stand by mode that saves power when not in use. Unfortunately, as stated above, the printer seems to go through an almost complete start up procedure when it wakes from stand by mode.
It scans either to JPG or PDF format. This is ideal for scanning documents that you want to email as they can be scanned directly into PDF format and then emailed. The scanning feature connects to the computer so I simply scan and then open the file on my computer.
1. Prints from all devices tested so far - iPad, iPhone, Laptop, Desktop - Brilliantly simple and about the cheapest wireless printer you can find at the moment with this amount of flexibility.
2. Quick and easy to set up - you dont even need to install the drivers off the included CD if you prefer not to as Windows 7 detects and installs basic drivers for you automatically.
3. Compact size - doesnt need much space and because its wireless can be stuck anywhere out of the way.
4. Reasonably priced consumables - having spent a fortune on ink with other printers, this was a major factor.
Overall very pleased with this purchase and would recommend it.
