I think this is my third or fourth HP printer, it's solid and well built, and if it lasts as long as the others I'll be a happy man. I would have given it five stars were it not for the difficulties I had setting up the wireless connection, and the less than intuitive way you have to set the printer up to handle two different paper sizes. Oh, and another thing, the documentation is just OK - I am afraid I am one of those guys who likes nice thick instruction manuals not the single sheet and few pages you get these days.
It is fast and prints good images but on occasions instead of picking up one sheet it will feed 2 sometimes 3 which can be extremely annoying. This never happened with the older officejet pro 8000 model which i still prefer over this.
It also doesn't handle any media heavier than paper and cant do any custom paper sizes on a PC, it will only do this from a mac which was quite a surprise as this wasn't advertised clearly.
My old HP wireless 'all-in-one' stopped working, so I made sure this time to buy a printer-only model, as I never really use the scan and copy functions, and all the extra software that comes with those pretty much just irritates me, especially the way HP insists on installing all sorts of applications and demo versions and customer feedback systems and what-not, without as much as by-your-leave.
The wireless networking software of my old HP was really flaky, but I thought that since this model was billed as a more professional choice, and also it is a printer-only, I thought I'd get something more straightforward and reliable on the wireless networking side. Alas, this didn't prove to be the case. The printer is a hassle to get up and running in more ways than one.
Firstly, the documentation is absolute rubbish, so bad that I almost returned the whole thing because of that. The instructions bear no resemblance to reality, it's almost as if they're written for a different model, and in any case the printed material at least is woefully inadequate. Secondly, the software installation doesn't go through until you apply various patches and updates, and even then the Mac installation is far from smooth (the Windows one seems to go through better).
The biggest problem, however, is with the networking: although the printer finds my WLAN and you can get into its management module via a browser (as long as you know its IP address), printing wirelessly is not possible until after a lot of fiddling, repeated attempts at installing the various bits of the software, updating your operating systems, etc. And even then, the next day it had somehow lost the network, and I had to do everything again. :-( I think all in all I spent nearly ten hours getting it up and running, and came very close to packing it up and sending it back. Not good enough, HP!
The ePrint (printing via the web) seems to work relatively smoothly, and so far better than expected. I didn't think it would, nor did I consider this to be a particularly valuable or interesting function, but I'm starting to see the point of it.
So all in all, a good printer once you get it operational, but be prepared to tear a good chunk of your hair out in the process. (If you don't need the wireless printing, then it's probably a piece of cake, but then again why would you buy a wireless printer in that case...?!)
Very pleased with speed and print quality.
On the downside, you have to remove the complete paper drawer to fit in envelopes, and when printing just one envelope we find this time consuming.
last few years.
Really like this one, faster start up than the 8000, faster printing and doesn't seem to go to standby like the 8000 did. Very quiet in operation and good print quality.
Had it about 1 month now and no problems. Installed easily on XP and 7, haven't used the wireless facility since my work network is all wired.
Update. June 2013.
Sent it back to Amazon for refund. Think I will try another since I still like it.
