I needed a printer for occasional use and had to have a small footprint. This one ticked the right boxes for me. I didn’t want an ink jet as I would have had issues with the cartridges drying up and going to waste so the laser jet was an ideal choice and thankfully this one isn’t some desk monster. Being wireless I was able to put it onto a shelf in my study and it doesn’t get in the way. It can hold a few hundred sheets of paper and the print quality is pretty good for what it is. I have printed out photographs on A4 standard paper and they are quite clean and crisp. It doesn’t look like it will take anything less than A4, but I haven’t looked that much into it as I only need A4 prints.
It initially I thought this was a simple cube, but you have to partially pull the paper tray out and this stays permanently stuck out. The wireless set up was a bit of a drag, not due to the printer but due to BT home hub. For some reason when I used the WPS button, my router was reset to a strange SSID and a password that was neither mine nor default. When I looked into it I found that it is a known issue with some BT hubs. I had to do a hard factory reset of the router. Once I was back up and running, I used the WPS option from within the web portal and I was connected. I haven’t used the HP software suite as quite frankly I don’t need it. Apparently, you can scan and print from their App, but I could do that with the default software on my phone which makes me think that it is a marketing con to make it look like the printer is also a scanner, which it isn’t. From Windows, I just use the native print options from within the package I am using. PDFs may need to be resized to fit page in the print options as they look like pictures to the printer and may be cut off on the edges.
Bottom line: for a laser jet it is small, reasonably priced, has good basic functions and an acceptable plain paper print quality.
EDIT. Paper tray can be closed back into the printer, but only when the tray is empty.
Also check consumable prices. Original parts are very expensive. Lack of 3rd party supplies, but they are sure to follow

Despite being less than 3 feet away (nothing like the 30m/100 foot range), this took several attempts before it successfully paired with our router using WPS pairing. There was no manual option, as the printer doesn’t have a keyboard, LCD/LED display screen, or select buttons on it.
I was initially surprised by the absence of quick start guide. But soon discovered that the chunky-looking manual is multi-lingual and includes only brief user support – 3 pages per language. The printer doesn’t come with a software installation disc, instead points the user to the HP website. Usually, I favour this. My main computer is a just over a year old iMac, and doesn’t have an inbuilt DVD drive. I do have an external drive, should I really need it – but it’s normally easier to download software where possible (not least as discs tend to include obsolete versions that require immediate updating). In this case, I was less keen. For some reason the HP website seemed to be on a go slow, the first few times I accessed it – putting my Mac into spinning colour wheel of death mode. In the end, I gave up and waited for another day. Only to find no download software was available from the HP site for my iMac’s fully up to date OS, and I could have got on with Apple’s native Bonjour software. Once this needless waste of time was out of the way, it was very easy to set up the printer for use with my iMac via the Apple settings menu. Once set up, this prints small size files quickly and well. Larger files take a long time to process once the file has been sent to the printer. (I'll get back to this later).
Installing the relevant phone software made me grumpy. The Google Play store holds multiple pieces of software for HP and it wasn’t altogether apparent which were needed. In the absence of guidance, apart from a QR code link in the manual, I started with HP Smart, and then discovered I also needed a (larger) Print Services plugin. These downloaded and installed quickly over Wifi (though the files are quite large). I was not thrilled by these as, when reviewing the privacy policies, I found unnecessarily intrusive options pre-selected as the default and I’m not a fan of being asked to give blanket consent for the App to access files on my phone.
Default photo printing quality from images taken with my phone’s camera was not impressive – did not size to fit the page, and the resulting image was very blocky (looking in places more like a tapestry than a photo). The printer was quite slow to print the file once sent. I’m used to software handling on a phone taking a bit of time, but was surprised by how slow the printer was with handling a photo file – until I realised it has only 64MB of on board memory. This is, IMO, not sufficient. Memory is not something that takes a large amount of space in a device, nor is it particularly expensive, so this truncation feels like a false economy.
This is a very small colour laser printer, and in limiting the size the manufacturers have pared back on several aspects of functionality. This offers wifi and colour, but no automatic duplexing ability. There are a small number of lights/buttons on the top, but no LED/LCD display panel and little in the way of input options.
Whilst most of the printer feels chunky, robust, and well-made, the paper tray is thin, flimsy feeling, on the shallow side, holding a maximum of 150 pages… but this seems to be based on a paper type range including thin 60gsm paper, rather than more usual 80gsm copier paper. The paper tray has a telescoping structure. A4 paper doesn't fit in to the tray unless it's expanded, and sticking out at the front of the machine. Not shown in any of the manufacturer images. The tray should - I assume – slide back, but so far I can’t get it to do this, and there’s no mention of any part of manoeuvring the paper tray in the supplied user guide. The recommended duty cycle for this printer is quite light – 100 to 500 pages. Over a year (365 days) this works out at between approx 3.28 and 16.44 pages per day.
The printer is supplied with a complete set of toner cartridges, but these are starter cartridges, with a smaller capacity than the standard toner cartridges.
At the time of writing, this is titled to include “Print, Copy, and Scan from your phone”. This does have these abilities, but only to the extent that any other wireless, phone/tablet enabled single function printer has: you can take pictures of things you might want to print/scan using a phone, and then print these out. This is not the same as using a proper PSC. It doesn’t achieve the same professionalism of finish and, thanks to the small amount of RAM, are features that seem to run on the slow side when using this machine. There are lots of places where cost-cutting/space-saving measures make sense - but running RAM on the low side is something I regard as a false economy. The printer runs slow out of the box when printing a photo or larger file - and, by and large, applications tend to become more data hungry over time. I have upgraded printer memory in the past, but never felt motivated to do so with a new printer before.
A nice, neat looking laser printer. But significantly less practical in reality than it appeared at first glance.
The accompanying literature and advertising promises ease of set up, great functionality at a very reasonable price.
I could not set it up and when I checked on social media, this was a problem others had found.
I returned mine.
If you are thinking of getting a small laser printer, I suggest you check the independent reviews, as they are not uniformly favourable, so you can decide whether the less positive features mentioned do or do not apply to you and the way you want to organise your printing.
The documents provided are minimal, but you can download a 122 page pdf manual. Having bought the printer only a few months after its release, none of the usual Linux tools recognised it and I needed a ppd file. To get that 36 KB file I had to download a 6 GB zip file, which provided me with an installation script that didn't work and who knows what else! But CUPS accepted the ppd with no problems.
