I'll start with the positive:
- It is very quick to boot. From turning it on to running Chrome from the desktop takes all of 10 seconds (thanks also to the fingerprint scanner, which makes logging in very quick too).
- It's a very attractive looking machine, although several design cues seem to have been taken from a certain competitor in particular...
- Multitouch touchpad has several gestures inbuilt to interact with Windows 8.1 that go some way to lessen the impact of not having a touchscreen.
- The hardware performs at the level it should, and still allows for about 3 hours battery life on average. I'll address the graphics in particular later.
- Whilst I was hesitant to buy anything with the "Beats" logo on it, I was pleasantly surprised by the in-built speakers. They're very good... for inbuilt laptop speakers.
And the negative:
- The keyboard is not very nice. It feels flimsy, actually has a slight give in the middle which is a little worrying, and its very easy to skip letters and make typos due to it not being particularly responsive and very low. The touchpad, too, is pretty frustrating to use: whilst the gestures I mentioned earlier are useful, the pad itself also has issues with responsiveness and it's difficult to differentiate between left and right clicks sometimes as a result. It is - in a word - poor. I would certainly recommend using a mouse.
- The amount of heat generated when the device is under stress is much more than I am used to in a laptop. Especially when running games, the chassis heats up to be almost too hot to comfortably touch in one area in particular - near the "escape" key on the keyboard. Whilst this hasn't seemed to affect the performance yet, it is worrying. It also causes the fan to spin extremely loudly. I'm talking "you can hear it through a closed door" loudly. People will complain if you try to play a game on a train or plane. This could have been a deal breaker for me if I'd known before buying.
- The screen has a very narrow good viewing angle and isn't the best quality despite being full HD. It's flimsy and bends easily because it seems only to have a thin plastic back to support it.
If you do choose to buy it, there are a couple of things I would have found useful to know about the hardware on day one:
- The graphics card needs a little explaining. It's a dedicated card tied to an on-CPU graphics solution. It requires that the correct driver be downloaded from the AMD website to work properly - the one provided by HP and the one that comes pre-installed WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY. There is no setting to allow you to run only the dedicated GPU: it can only be run in tandem with the integrated graphics (this has yet to cause any problems for me). However it IS possible to only run the onboard graphics in the interests of power conservation.
As far as benchmarking goes, I'm not really interested in pushing it to its limits so I can't really comment on its ability to run the latest games. So far, it's been able to play "Hand of Fate" and "League of Legends" in mid detail at 1920x1080 resolution with about 50-60FPS average, after I installed the correct drivers.
- Don't trust temperature readings from third-party hardware monitors. If you want to check your machine's status, use AMD Overdrive. The "Thermal Margin" is the number of degrees under maximum operating temperature at which the CPU is currently running; when it hits zero, the CPU will underclock to reduce the temperature.
Would I buy this again? For £330, probably. For £400+, probably not.
I bought as a gift for my girlfriend, she uses it to watch movies, play games and surf the web, it hasn't experienced any slowdowns yet and is quite impressive. I plan to upgrade the ram to 16gb and add an ssd then it will be a very good laptop.
I like the backlit keyboard it makes typing at night easy and the laptop feels premium nice build quality, it includes a 2 gig graphics card so it can play most games reasonably well.
