Taking the first of those two, Chrome OS is a very good piece of work. It's what Apple's iCloud should have been, but very conspicuously isn't. Most home users can do most of what they need to on the web, and Chrome OS offers a well thought out and intuitive way to do this. The list of apps is already large and growing all the time, and I think that Chrome OS, or something like it, is the future for home computing. All Chromebooks boot within seconds, and you can be online and working almost immediately. The machine is virtually malware-proof, because all the 'business end' is on web servers, not on your Chromebook. Also the OS is automatically updated on a regular basis, so you're always up to date.
Turning now to this particular Chromebook, I have mixed feelings. At under £250, it's very good value for money. SSD, not platter hard drive, so it's very quiet. Two USB3 ports, one USB2, HDMI. Battery life seems very good - I'm getting 8 or 9 hours out of a full charge. Comfortable keyboard and tracker. Nice big screen too.
But it's that display that's the downside as well. The colours look rather washed out and anaemic, and the viewing angles are poor - you need to be at just the right anglde to get a good viewing experience. If you're used to a tablet, you'll be disappointed. This seems to be true of all Chromebooks, with the (afaik) sole exception of the Chromebook Pixel. But then, what do you expect for under £250?Read more ›
I literally wanted it as something to just pick up and have around in the living room without really having to worry about it. My windows laptop needs replacing (as does my fiance's but she's getting a new one for Christmas!) and is big, bulky and gets extremely hot. I should note that it's about 5 years old now but at the time is was cutting edge and cost about £900.
The screen on this isn't great, that's true, but I don't find it terrible by any means - it's certainly no worse that my Windows laptop and to be honest probably has better viewing angles.
The speed of the Chromebook is clearly the best thing going for it - I rarely shut it down (as the battery lasts ages) so pretty much as soon as I open the lid it's on and ready to go. Performance in use is also brilliant due to the Intel chip which probably isn't really being tasked much by the OS.
Wifi is quick to connect and the 2xUSB3 and 1xUSB2 ports provide good options for expandability as well as the SD card slot.
I love the size of the Chromebook, I feel now that a smaller screen like the Acer C720 would feel too cramped but to be honest it's probably a case of what you're used to. All I can say is that it sits nicely on my legs and doesn't get hot and doesn't weigh much either so it's really comfortable to use.
I also love the trackpad and rarely find a need for the mouse - the multi-touch gestures are really useful and I find the responsiveness good.Read more ›
I've only had this CB for a few hours but so far its everything I WANT it to be. Like other reviews on chromebooks in general, I have found the OS to be fast and very simple to use. Small learning curve needed, but literally a couple of hours if you already know how to use pc's/laptops ( and lets face, who doesn't).
For the price it has a great feel to it.
Keyboard is nice and so too is the track pad.
Obviously the screen is one weak point when compared to other devices on the market but at £249 is fine. I like my full HD, who doesn't, but for browsing the web and doing a little work from time to time its a fantastic secondary device (for the majority of people it can easily be a primary device. I have plex sever setup on a pc, obviously a chromebook/chromebox wouldnt surfice, but I've just watched part of a 720p film via the plex web app and its great!)
Love it. Would definitely buy another for my gf (kids when they are older).
And I'm trying to use chrome on all my devices now because all apps etc sync nicely.
If you have sh*t loads of cash then no doubt apple is a superior product on all accounts (at present). But for the price 5 stars all the way.
I have read reviews on all available chromebooks and was waiting for the Asus C300 (because its fanless(baytrail)), but decided on the larger screen and faster processor, PLUS 4gb ram!!!!! Goes along way when a few tabs are open.
Get one. Who needs microsoft anymore. Why pay when chrome OS is free
EDIT: After a week of using this device I am still impressed by its capabilities. Simplicity with speed to please most if not everyone. Better screen would have been the icing on the cake. But still 5 stars.
