Light and portable as a netbook should be!
Pretty (superficial I know but it is very pretty!) - It has an attractive red shell inside and out (unlike the picture)
Good sound quality - I have tried out several videos and songs and the sound quality over all is good - It reaches a very loud level
It comes with Microsoft Office Basic (Basic Word and Excel) which is all I really need, so that has saved me £80. I suspect anything too large (i.e the professional version of office) might slow down the machine too much
The webcam is good for the size and price bracket of the machine - You can obviously get better but what do you expect in a netbook of this price bracket?
It can cope with a lot - Going by previous views of other netbooks that do two things and crash this is good - You just have to be patient with it when waiting for things to load and not try and do 100 things at once
The keys on the keyboard are a sensible size and not too small you can't use them - There is also the added bonus of NO gaps between keys = no dust and dirt
The only downsides for me are - It comes pre loaded with many programmes which means you have to do a thorough clean out before you can get started - Just a minor inconvenience really
Windows 7 Starter does not allow many things (such as customisation of the wallpaper and such) that many people, including me, love to do. I suspect premium versions of 7 would clog up the machine too much but it is always possible if you wish to change it (although it would cost a lot)
Overall this is a machine that over performs for its price bracket (in my opinion) and is a worthy choice for a netbook :)
Bought this baby a little after five o'clock on 16 July, and it arrived, safely packaged, on the morning of the 19th (the postman must have thought I was mad, my smile was so big). So brilliant dispatch service from Amazon for an extra £3.33 spent on First Class delivery.
Now to the machine itself. I bought it because I'm chronically ill and I wanted a little machine to use in bed. My preferred writing software is Scrivener, and I was a bit concerned the netbook might be too small. There was no need for concern. Scrivener works beautifully on this. If you are familiar with the programme, I either use Full Screen mode or get rid of the Inspector and I have a pretty clear pitch to play on. Also Scrivener works just as well on this Mini as it does on my Toshiba 15.6" laptop.
The keyboard takes a little getting used to - that's to be expected as it doesn't have the numberpad full-sized laptops do. This might only affect touch-typists (my boyfriend is of the two-Fingered variety and he got on fine) - and I'm warming to it fast as it has a lovely touch. The touch-pad is brilliant once you get it set to your needs and there are loads of little time-saving features I'm looking forward to learning to use.
Also thought the fact that on this netbook you can't change the desktop picture might be a problem. (Actually that should be a boon as I'm one of those writers who will do anything else *but* write, and fiddling with the desktop is classic writerly procrastination.) But for those who really, really need a desktop picture, my solution was to put the slideshow gadget on my desktop which gives me loads of lovely pictures I've added to look at, instead the dull operating system logo.
In short, this little beauty is the bee's knees, the cat's pyjamas, the mutt's nuts - I am so pleased I finally bought myself one, and Amazon thoroughly deserved my money for such a great service.
Oh, and if you're looking at the blue one, the Mini really is *that* gorgeous shade of kingfisher blue!
I haven't been so happy with a purchase since I got my first PC back in the Stone ages (1997) and my Kindle this year. If like me you're a writer thinking of buying something for out and about, or just in bed or a chair, you won't go wrong with an HP Mini. In fact I don't think I'm exaggerating if I say it will probably light up your life.
