design. Although the book is small in overall size - it measures
about 8 1/2 inches by 6 ¼ inches - it contains a great many photographs
that are arranged in a most pleasing style that is not static or
repetitive. Some pages contain only one image while other pages
contain two, three, or four images. At least one page contains five
images and another eight images. It is the constant variation in
how and where the images are placed that contributes to making
this book a work of photographic art. It is like strolling through an
art gallery and viewing works of different sizes arranged at various
positions or levels on the walls. Each page becomes a revelation.
Hot Babes contains a mixture of color and black-and-white photographs.
The model selection is of a high quality. The women portrayed look
like the type of women frequently associated with contemporary fashion
photography and erotic photography. There are not too many bodies
adorned with tattoos, piercings, or surgical enhancements. So, to my
eye, the women look like natural women who are being portrayed lovingly
in frequently erotic poses by a man who appreciates the inherent eroticism
and sensuality of the female body. The settings are not obtrusive in
any way; most of the work is done indoors. There are a few outdoor
locations, and personally I would have preferred to see more of those
utilized. The styling of the photographs is consistently first rate.
Mr. Troop definitely knows how to use a camera to capture a woman's
beauty and sexuality. His composition all through the book is excellent.
His direction of his models is masterful. One can see the rapport between
photographer and model in many of the images. One can often sense the
mutual desire in both parties to create an image that has visual impact and
is a testament to the woman's beauty.
There are 128 pages in the book with approximately 215 individual images.
Most images are of single models, and while many of the positions of their
bodies are revealing none are vulgar in any way. Nothing is extreme in the
context of the photograph. There is some bondage and it is very mild,
nothing painful or violent. The reproduction of every photograph in the
book is superb. It is a quality publication throughout. It is a miniature work
of art produced by an artist who obviously cares about his work and his audience.
My one quibble - and it is indeed minor - is the lack of text providing
information as to model's name, exact location and date of each session.
I realize that luxury would have added slightly to the cost of the book and
would be of slight interest to most general buyers. But it is of interest to
me as I am a fine art photographer of the female nude. I appreciate that
type of information.
Given my background of working with nude models for decades, I feel
most qualified to render my honest opinion of this book of photographs. I
have a good idea of what Mr. Troop went through to bring this project to
fruition. There are many books of a similar type on the market and I have
not seen most of them to be sure. But I have seen this one and I like it.
There is a lot of variety, and always quality, to the imagery. Michael Troop
shares my love and respect for women. He is to be commended and supported
for producing his visual statement in an elegant form for the public to enjoy.
