The more I think about it the more these two books remind me of Bridget Jones' Diary. Holly/Bridget, Toby/Mark Darcy, James/Daniel, close-knit friends (one always gay), a baddie Tanya/Rebecca and a crazy mum. Still all good though!
Other people's correspondence always makes compulsive reading if you're at all interested in people. Whilst the contents of the e-mails are frequently trivial the idea that you're spying on someone else's life draws you in and before you know where you are you're on page 100 and you're hooked! I loved it and it's a quick read - don't be put off by the number of pages as e-mail takes up more space than ordinary print.
Following Holly's next step was exciting, she feels like one of my closest friends, and that's the beauty of "HIB" once you start, you're hooked.
I arrived at work this morning to find my copy had been delivered, having already read the first 3 1/2 months online, i couldn't wait to find out what happened.
And i wasn't let down. I got home from work at 6.15pm, between then and 8.20pm, i'd got changed, had dinner and finished the book! Whew!
Roll on "Holly Inbox 3"...we're all waiting with anticipation!
Anyone who has worked in an office will recognize the back-biting and politics immediately. Hopefully, they'll also recognize the warm friendships that you just don't find in other places. I love Holly, because she's a real, imperfect, interesting person. She doesn't live a glam, impossible life that nobody in the real world would ever hope to achieve. She struggles with boyfriends, bills and bosses, just like most of the rest of us. The difference is that Holly Denham, the author, puts creates a character for these stories and gives us a story that keeps us turning pages well into the night.
I enjoyed it as much as the first book, but felt it was even more contrived than the first. It suffered from Bridget Jones 2 syndrome: what do you do when your heroine achieves her happy ever after at the end of the first book? Here the author decides (as they do in the second Bridget Jones book/film) to artificially create tension by breaking up the two main characters.
The peripheral characters and their snappy exchanges with Holly are as fun as ever although I did miss Aisha's mad antics from the first book.
I tired a little of the predictable nature of the plot in the end - even the 'surprise bombshell' wasn't exactly shocking, given the amount of foreshadowing the author provided.
As with the first novel it's no more than light entertainment but diverting enough for an afternoon's reading.
