I saw all of the reviews and saw that they were mostly 4 and 5 stars and on those reviews I decided I would give the book a go.
I can tell you that I was not at all disappointed at all. I'm not sure if it is a YA book specifically but it really appeals to all ages.

HIDDEN is well written and the way Shalini Boland explains details it puts you inside the book. It is almost as if you are part of the book ... how amazing is that? That to me is what made the book amazing.

Read it, you will definitely enjoy it if you like this type of story.

Vampires, an inheritance with a secret, archaeology, scary men in white coats : all classic ingredients in this upbeat retelling of the vampyr legend.

HIDDEN breaks with Transylvanian tradition by placing the vampires deep under the soil of Cappadocia where two archaeologists take their families excavating in 1881, triggering off a series of terrifying adventures.
In this timespill narrative, the lives of 19th century Alexandre and 21st century Maddy cross over in a tantalizing weave, rushing headlong towards an uncertain future.

Here is a book crammed with colour: Byzantine imagery, Victorian charm and a Thoroughly Modern Milly - that is, Maddy, an orphaned teenager in the 21st century who suddenly comes into an inheritance. She and her brother move into Marchwood House and begin exploring, only(as might be expected in a paranormal story) nothing is quite as it seems. An iron door in the cellar hides secrets over a hundred years old and through a series of chilling events, the story of the Cappadocian expedition is pieced together along with its impact on Maddy and Alexandre's lives.

The image of the vampire has haunted many cultures, both East and West, yet curiously there is little reference to them in Turkish folklore - although there is an interesting connection :Vlad Tepes, later Dracula, grew up during a period of semi-fealty to Turkey when his father paid tribute to the Sultan. Bloodthirsty reprisals illustrate most of Vlad's life in his efforts to free his country and he passed into legend as a hero to his own people, until Bram Stoker came across his name in a Whitby library book and spawned a literary genre that is flourishing healthily today.

Having discovered Shalini Boland through her new adult psychological thriller The Girl from the Sea (which I devoured in a day) I thought I'd try one of her YA books (with a choice of post apocalyptic series or vampire series I went for the latter).
Hidden surprised me, it's been a while since I've read anything YA and although I've been known to watch vampire programmes on tv I've not read vampire books.
The book starts written from two characters perspectives Madison in the present time and Alexandre in 1881.
I liked the timeline split, the modern day foster care lifestyle of Madison in comparison with the rich Victorian era feel of Alexandre in France who then travels with his family on an archeological dig.
Later on as Madison and Alexandre's timelines cross it then continues with both characters in the present time.
I was surprised by how long the vampire link took to be added to the story by then I had read so much about Madison and Alexandre I was already connected to their characters and wanted to read more.
It was a far less gruesome read than I had imagined it would be (being about vampires I'd imagined lots of bloodthirsty scenes) which actually was quite refreshing and actually had a feel of a time travel romance about it in places. It had some interesting twists and though it could be read as a stand alone novel I know there are two further books in this series and I'm intrigued to find out what will happen next and get to know additional characters better.
Overall a good read, and a series I will continue with

This is, without doubt, one of the best YA novels I have ever read. I just couldn't put it down. I loved the combination of the past and the present intertwined with mystery and romance and downright spookiness!
I can't wait to read the sequel.
If you haven't bought yourself a copy of this book, then do it NOW. It's AWESOME!!
And Hollywood... if you're reading, this book would be FANTASTIC as a movie! Get to it!!
Can you tell I'm excited about this book? Can you??!!

Think about the sheer number of times a book has claimed to be the one you won't be able to put down against how many times that statement has been correct. Many fall at this hurdle of truth but Shalini Boland's first novel `Hidden' has every right to possess this lofty claim. The twin tales of present day teenager Madison and the 18th century Alexandre weave their way through many twists and turns in their respective time zones and interlock beautifully (the joining of their stories is the books best kept secret so I won't spoil it for you here). Flowing seamlessly between the present and 1881 keeps both sides of the story unfolding at a steady pace and chapters always end on a cliff-hanger. Descriptive without over explanation, Boland's characters are vivid on each level. Clear thought about what each person should possess and great visualisation makes each one fold back the pages and builds themselves in the room with you. Madison is beautiful, feisty and full of attitude with an underlying presence of anger and vulnerability; if she were real she's the girl you'd want as your best friend. Alexandre is outwardly confident, cocky and too handsome for his own good. His privileged rich kid persona is initially a little difficult to feel an affinity with but after soiling his reputation he becomes much more likable as he is shown as being not so perfect after all.
`Hidden' is aimed at the young adult section but there's no need to walk on by if, like me, you stopped being a young adult some time ago. Wonderfully written and possessing an absorbing storyline, `Hidden' is this years' best read. The ending is suitably fitting and Boland has created a sinister undercurrent that bubbles away for what is sure to be a fantastic book two. `Hidden' is the book that will make you want the feistiness of the heroine, the excitement of adventure and the love of the main man. Romantic and thrilling all in one.
