Right first the niggles.....printer arrived packaged upside down in the box, as you can see in the first image. I thought something was wrong when the foam packaging was difficult to remove. However after a some effort I flipped the box over and let gravity help with the unpacking. Next issue, the box inside that holds the spares etc the tape had popped open so I had screws and washers etc all over the inside of the box as the zip lock bag hadn't been sealed adequately. I'm pretty sure everything is here but I can tell you I was really annoyed at this.
They claim in a lot of places that build time is 10 minutes to half an hour....this may be so if you know all the parts are accounted for. It took about an hour before I was sure all was there and it was put together correctly. I expected assembly to be fiddly, and I was correct, putting the connectors in for endstops and steppers could be awkward for anyone with larger hands. Using a pair of tweezers can help here.
Once together and plugged in it powered on fine, the really annoying part came next. I tried to load filament, I couldn't due to the ptfe tubing being plugged both ends by pla. So i had to remove the tubing and check the hotend wasn't clogged too. Please bare in mind this was purchased "new" not used....so if this was due to someone checking the function of the machine before it shipped, they should check the tube for clogs first. You can see this in the images above too.
Okay plus points...it's a big printer, rigid without modding but better with printer but braces. Print quality is good in the test file, and quite a lot better when you use custom settings via your slicer of choice.
It's a lot quieter than some printers too, but it'll need some work to get it as quiet as my other I3 printers. It comes with spare end stop, nozzle and ptfe tubing too which is great.
If you get this I suggest you print out the heated bed stress relief clip to prevent too much wear and tear to the wires, and the filament guide too or you will find your filament rubbing against the lead screw. These of course could be provided by the manufacturer or vendor and it would really help people out.
The build is easy enough but fiddly, print quality excellent and for the money you won't find a bigger printer for the price. If it wasn't for all the hassle I'd give the machine 5 stars as it does a great job. However these things need mentioning to anyone looking at buying this. Hope this helps
Hictop have been in touch and assured me that they've been in touch with their supplier regarding the issue I had with the packing and have checked their current stock. Hopefully this will mean that no one else has a poorly packaged delivery...So bonus points for their swift action there. They have also offered to send me replacements for both the PTFE tubing and a new .4mm nozzle, as I've had to switch out the one installed with the spares. So I've updated my review to 4 stars to reflect their prompt action. Good comms from hictop.
I have also picked up a mirror tile for the bed. Available as a pack of four from ikea.
Highest I have printed so far is 350mm. No problems.
Only issue at the moment is that it has developed a noise when travelling left to right quickly. There is a buzzing from the hot end. Think it is one of the fans. It's not affecting prints at the moment. Just annoying noise that wasn't there at beginning. That being said, it is running 24/7 🤔😁
I received a free roll of hictop filament with the printer and have been so impressed I have bought 3 more rolls so far.
The packaging was excellent and the provided extra tools were a great bonus, also some spare parts if needed including PTFE tube and connectors
My only gripe is the print bed glass is not totally flat. It has a bow in the middle. Causes problems with levelling.Overcome because I know about 3D printing. Could be a problem for novices.
The 3D prints I get are brilliant. Its as good as a genuine Prusa I3 MK2.
I'd recommend this printer to anyone above novice, the large print volume is just what I needed. :)
It came in a well packaged box, arrived quickly as usual from Amazon.
build time was less than a hour, instructions are fair to good, take your
time and all will be well.
I have been making things with it every day since I got it 6 hour, 12 hour prints
not a problem, also compared to another printer I had, its not loud at all which is
for the price and quality of the prints when set up and calibrated, is excellent,
probably one of the best printer buys out there, for general 3d printing for the money.
The software supplied is very dated and the micro SD port is just not practical, so I have usb cabled my printer to my PC, didnt bother with the Cura 14.2 supplied ( out of date), instead downloading the latest ultimaker cura free of charge. What a delight, turned it on, PC talks to 3d printer, all settings can be recomended by the program, printer heats up, prints and cools down. I love it. When setting up the printer use the CR10 settings.
The build quality for a Chinese manufactured item is not bad, the frame is strong, electrics are ok. If you look on Amazon you ccan buy most of the spares. Overall for the price and performance, I think this deserves 5 stars.
