This review is for those wondering about the contents of this External HDD: I can say definitively that this is one drive: a 4TB Hitachi Deskstar HDS724040ALE640 7K4000 SATA III - 6Gb/s Hard Drive Hitachi 4TB Deskstar 7K4000 6Gb/s 3.5 inch SATA Hard Drive

I opened up two of these 4TB Touro's this afternoon, and have put them in my NAS. Saved myself about £100 by buying two external drives (vs the internal price) and opening the cases for internal use. Youtube for advice on opening the drive cases, I used a pocket knife and three flat-head screwdrivers. I have binned the cases, but you could probably glue the case back together and use with another HDD if you wished, but I'd not recommend it.

Regarding the drive: they are rated MTBF (mean time between failure) of 2 million hours, which is double the WD Red, WD Green at 750,000 hours, and Seagate Barracuda's are 700,000 hours, for comparison.

Should provide me with supreme reliabilty and superb value to boot.

Edit: Thanks to "S. Ali" who pointed out that I had used the Hitachi Ultrastar 7K4000 MTBF numbers, and they do not quote MTBF for the Deskstar 7K4000. An honest mistake. However, both the Deskstar and Ultrastar have "Load/Unload Cycles" at 600,000. The same as a WD Red, according to my quick research, and WD Green is 300,000. And, Seagate Barracuda XT is 300k. They do like to confuse things with their different reliabilty standards! The best news is that this drive continues to get cheaper, and still offers by far the best reliability/capacity to the £ for 4TB.

Also, just a quick note on transfer speeds, as I also have a couple of these as backup drives. Consistent large size file transfer speeds of ~150MB/s over USB 3, which is fast in case you didn't know. :) Also, of note, this drive has very recently received a 'Best Buy' award from expertreviews.

After filling up a 2TB drive, I needed something bigger and went for the Hitachi as they have a very good reputation for reliability. Various reviews cite the higher rated MTBF for the Hitachi drive but in particular a blog post from a company who use thousands of consumer hard drives posted some figures comparing Western Digital, Seagate and Hitachi where they'd found the Hitachis had been noticeably more reliable so hopefully that will turn out to be the case (will still be keeping backups of course).

The difference between the Touro Pro and the Touro DX3 4TB drives is the speed of the drives, the pro is 7200rpm and the the DX3 should be 5400rpm. The enclosure itself is relatively basic comprised of plastic all round with no fan, there's a single blue light on the front for activity, a kensington lock slot, USB plug and power in. As this is a desktop drive it requires a power supply as it draws too much power for USB. Performance over USB3 seems very good for a hard drive easily hitting 50+MB/s although I suspect it's been limited by the speed of my internal drives which are older Samsung 2TB 5400rpm units. The lack of fan doesn't appear to be an issue as I've mine running all day doing a backup and it had no heat or stability problems. I wasn't listening closely to the drive but it's pretty quiet at least when near another PC. My only complaints with the case are it's wider than I think it needs to be and there's no on/off button, you have to pull the plug to switch it off which isn't a very neat solution.

Like others I bought the USB version to take the drive out and put into a PC as for some reason the bare drive has always been quite a bit more expensive.

Packaging and delivery were excellent from Amazon. The drive is in a retail package, so damage in transit should not be an issue. I bought it to back up a Windows 7 (64-bit) PC using the Windows 7 utility. This utility has previously worked OK on a Western Digital 2TB Elements USB-2 external drive and it also works on a 4TB Hitachi Deskstar 4TB SATA internal drive. The Windows 7 backup does not work with this drive and flags up an I/O error, several hours into the process. I see from another review that it is a known problem. Whether it is the disk, or the operating system, don't expect this drive to work with Windows 7 backup straight out of the box. I tested the drive prior to using it using Seagate's SeaTools for Windows and it passed all their tests, so it looks good for general use, even if it does not work with Windows 7 backup. I give 5 stars for Amazon's service and the price of this huge drive (huge in 2013!). The problems I am having might not be the drive's fault. I have only just started to use it and if it gives any further problems I will update this review. So it is now 2016 and 4TB is still quite big. This drive drives me nuts by keep going to sleep. There appears to be no way of stopping it and it takes a minute to wake up. Often it will be called by a program which will appear to hang whilst the drive gets its act together.

This drive failed after 4 months.

I contacted the seller but they refused to accept responsibility, saying it has passed the 90 day Amazon warranty period. They told me to contact Hitachi.

The sale of goods act clearly says that the seller has responsibility for a defective item, not the manufacturer. Also that should be fit for purpose. In this context my understanding is that this means that a product should not fail within 12 months.

Luckily Hitachi were brilliant and replaced it without question.

I recommend that buyers avoid Comtronics.
