This adapter lets you display a HDMI picture on a VGA monitor, whilst also providing a powered HDMI sound card (for want of a better description). There are some limitations; the monitor must be at least 1280x1024 going by my own trials. I never managed to get a picture on a 1024x768 monitor.
It works best with the HDMI set to a DVI resolution. Otherwise, upscaling and downscaling can be hit and miss, with some of the picture lost to overscan. If you can output the correct resolution for your screen, though, it's absolutely superb.
This device does not support HDCC, so cannot be used to play most Blu-Rays.
The sound output is lively and sounds good, with no introduced noise.
I bought this for use with my Raspberry Pi. It does require a little bit of editing of the config file to get it working with the right resolution while still using the sound output, but it's all properly documented online. It's a good match for the Pi; you get to use a spare monitor, and you can avoid using the internal sound card, which saves the Pi a lot of CPU work.
