I did have some trouble finding the pin reference, so for anyone else it is:
+ = 5v / 3.3v
D = I2C bus data (Arduino Analog A4)
C = I2C bus clock (Arduino Analog A5)
NC = Not Connected / Ground
- = Ground
I've tested it with the Adafruit RTCLib and then using RTClib in conjunction with PJRC Time & TimeLib with no problems.
After some fiddling I have it working and it sets the system clock early in the boot process before network gets started, so my DNS server is happy!
+ -> pin 1, 3.3V power
D -> BCM2 / SDA
C -> BCM3 / SCL
NC -> not connected but sits on BCM4 / GPCLK0
- -> pin 9, ground
So that's five pins gone if you want to connect it directly onto the header.
