From the Back Cover

Tragedy sent her on a
journey far from home . . .

Fifteen-year-old Beth's life is shattered when she and her brother Sam are orphaned. Believing that only in America can they make a fresh start, brother and sister leave Liverpool and embark on the greatest adventure of their lives.

In New York, Beth's talent with the fiddle earns her the friendship of chancers and other rogues who've come to make their fortunes. She is nicknamed Gypsy and befriends the charismatic gambler Theo and sharp-witted Londoner Jack. Dodging trouble across America, Beth and her new friends join the rush for the Klondike river in search of gold.

How far must Beth go to find happiness? And will her travels lead this gypsy to a place she can ever call home?

Lesley Pearse writes some brilliant books and I always enjoy her novels; As other reviews have said this was not her best, but this is because of the sheer brilliance of some of her others rather than a lesser read in this one. It was still an extremely high calibre story. It touched on areas of historical interest of which I had little or no knowledge, and this alone made it a fascinating read. Found the heroine slightly irritating in as much as she tolerated far too much from Theo (which I found a mixed message considering how courageous she was in other circumstances).

Rather too many "tragedies" and dramatic events crammed in to be plausible and I would have liked a more fulfilling ending - it seemed to squeal to a halt somewhat and left me wanting a more settled outcome.

However, well worth purchasing and opened my eyes to the history of the Gold rush etc.

L.
Pearse as much as usual too repetitive. And a lousy ending. Better luck next time!
