The Jule Styne/Stephen Sondheim musical follows the career of Gypsy Rose Lee from a young woman to 1930s burlesque headliner. Louise (Natalie Wood) is the young girl who is forced into the limelight by her theatrical mother Rose (Rosalind Russell) and becomes the celebrated stripper Gypsy. Karl Malden won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Herbie, a man who falls in love with Rose - and later regrets it.
Everything comes up roses when you let Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood and Karl Malden entertain you in the lavish movie musical of the Broadwayhit about Gypsy Rose Lee and her formidable mother.

It is indeed a full screen presentation of a horrible totally washed-out print.
YOu know when you watch completely remastered movies and then you watch the extras like the original trailer, which usually doesn't get remastered? Or when you see Restoration Comparisons in Fox movies? Well, this is the BEFORE version you are getting. It's THAT bad!
This print hasn't been touched in more than 20 years for sure.
I wish I had bought the US dvd. You should too.
Beware this disc is NOT widescreen, but pan and scanned from a very poor original negative, unlike the region 1 release. Hard to believe that with the emergence of widescreen TVs etc. that DVDs are released in anything other than letterbox format these days. A missed opportunity to release a definitive region 2 release.
I thought that the DVD looked and sounded good in 2.35:1 and 5.1 dolby digital. The Blu ray looks and sounds spectactular in 2.40:1 and only DTS-HD Master 2 channel stereo, using only the front speakers the sound is still crisp and full. recommended as an upgrade on the DVD and its region free.
Well worth it at the right price.
Rosalind Russell is a force to be reckoned with as the brash, indomitable Rose. She sings many memorable songs and runs the gamut from slapstick humor to heartbreaking tragedy. Karl Malden is wonderfully sympathetic as Herbie, the man who loved Rose. Natalie Wood is lovely as the adult Louise who, as Gypsy Rose Lee, enjoyed a career as a famous stripper and acted in some movies.
The sets are often stagy but there are terrific performances and spirited, singable songs. It's raucous and glamorous; highly recommended.
