Product description

About the Author

Adam-Troy Castro has said in interviews that he likes to jump genres and styles and has therefore refused to ever stay in place long enough to permit the unwanted existence of a creature that could be called a typical Adam-Troy Castro story. As a result, his short works range from the wild farce of his Vossoff and Nimmitz tales to the grim Nebula nominee Of a Sweet Slow Dance in the Wake of Temporary Dogs. His twenty prior books include a nonfiction analysis of the Harry Potter phenomenon, four Spider-Man adventures, and three novels about his interstellar murder investigator, Andrea Cort (including a winner of the Philip K. Dick Award, Emissaries from the Dead). Adam s other award nominations include eight Nebulas, two Hugos, and three Stokers. Adam lives in Florida with his wife, Judi, and three insane cats named Uma Furman, Meow Farrow, and Harley Quinn."

Continuing with my current MG obsession, especially with anything dark and creepy I moved on to this AMAZINGLY titled/illustrated book, Gustav Gloom and the People taker. I really enjoyed the originality of the whole shadow world and the mystery of who Gustav is. Fernie is a kick-ass main character - she doesn't give up and is brave and curious and just wonderful. I loved that I felt that we knew her entire family as well - and they were all given distinct personalities. The people taker and his beast is scary and horrible - although I wished we'd found out more about him and what happened to the people he took - hopefully something that is going to be explained in the next of these delightful books - which I will DEFINITLEY be picking up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids! 18 Aug. 2012
By Steph - Published on Amazon.com

OK, let me start by saying I am 45 years old and just read Gustav Gloom And The People Taker. Who says it is only for kids? I adored it! There were no slow parts in the book from beginning to end. What a great mind Mr. Castro has with such strong characters. The only problem is having to wait for the next book to come out. How could this possibly get any better? Not to give anything away, but I had to wipe my eyes at the end! I just want to hug Gustav! I can see a Tim Burton movie out of this series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for kids and adults 6 Sept. 2012
By Mark A Goldberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I was surprised at how much I have enjoyed reading Gustav Gloom to my kids, ages 8 and 10. The story moves along at a brisk pace, and I found myself continuing to read the book after they went to bed. Some elements may be a bit too scary for kids under 7 or 8, but if you are looking for a children's book that will provide a fun, challenging read for kids aged 8-15, you will find few that are better than this.

I cannot wait to see further adventures in Gustav's world. Highly recommended
5.0 out of 5 stars Creepy and Good 10 Feb. 2016
By Nick Sanders - Published on Amazon.com

My 8 year-old son was looking to move on from Goosebumps and I came across this series. I thought I would try the first book out to see how it went. Let me say it went very, very well. My son and his mother alternated reading chapters to each other and both had a great time. My son wants me to tell you that the book is "creepy and good" and that he wants me to buy the other books in this series. I will be doing so!

5.0 out of 5 stars My two sons loved this. 15 Oct. 2012
By Daniel Moran - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
My two sons fought over this book when we received it -- I bought it for my youngest, who's 10; he started reading it, and talked about how good it was, so his older brother stole it and started reading it. So the younger son stole it back, and then there were Issues. Happily, all was resolved ...

My 10 year old said he liked it but it was a bit creepy. In this book, shadows can leave the people who are casting them, and he thought that was pretty cool. He was pleased when the cat's shadow went off and became a giant tiger...

No detailed review from the older boy, except that he's looking forward to the next one.
4.0 out of 5 stars "FUN READ" 13 April 2013
By DarbeeZB - Published on Amazon.com

A "FUN" read...my son has really enjoyed this book. He is looking forward to the next two books...finding material that keeps my children entertained is important to me because it keeps them reading. I would suggest this book to other parents and children the story line is fun, inventive and the characters interesting.
