I love this film but if you're reading this then you probably do too. So I won't go into that here...

Was so pleased to find this on Region 2. Don't be put off by it being a Dutch release. Plays as an English film with no subtitles and all the on-screen menus are in English. No extras but with a film this good you don't need 'em! There has been digital re-mastering and it shows. Picture and sound are clearer than ever (with a little inconsistency but that's only to be expected given the films age).

Well worth the price for those of us without Region 1 capability.

The first time I saw this movie I really enjoyed it, and now I have my own copy to keep on enjoying it.
There are two main reasons why I like it, firstly I like fast cars, and movies about them.
This illegal race from New York to Longbeach provides the setting for some great road racing. The build up to the start of the race provides suitable background for the characters in the film. And the rules, "There are no rules".
The early morning race start, with the sound of high performance engines reverberating around New York City is just great.
There is a good range of performance cars, and some good footage of them on the roads accross America.
The film wouldn't be complete without an official presence, and the poor policeman who really wants to get these guys, just can't seem to get the right things together at the right time.
The other main reason I like the film is the message it portrays about the "wisdom?" of the blanket 55mph speed limit that had been imposed in the States at the time.
In summary, a great fun car race film.

I'd been after this 1976 gem for ages, and was as excited as someone who has a good reason to be excited about finally getting my hands on, "The Gumball Rally". A group of thrill seekers assemble in New York to race cross country to Long Beach in the fastest time possible, chased nearly every step of the way by incompetent cop Roscoe, it's a laugh a minute. Stars Michael Sarrazin, Raul Julia, and a young Gary Busey, it went onto inspire, "The Canonball Run".

Forget Smokey and the Bandit this is definately the best race movie around starring Michael Sarazin who is lucky enough to get the keys for the AC Cobra instead of the Ferrari Daytona.

Very much a comedy in the Smokey and the Bandit guise but more action and far better car chases that sees them racing from downtown New York to the dockside opposite the Queen Mary.

Its so long since ive seen the movie that i cannot remember most of it but the race between Daytona and Cobra was particularly memrobable.

If you have not seen the movie thats not surprising because it has not been televised for atleast six years maybe more,so much so that the only characters i know who were in the movie was Michael Sarazin and Rual Julia

Its a great chase film and wellworth watching, now that it is on dvd.

Just to say that this disc is actually multi-region - well, the disc I got is - covering regions 1,2,3 and 4.

Also, as it's a double-sided disc, the main feature (Gumball Rally) is the slightly-printed side up.

This disc was bought for a friend so I can't comment on its quality, but everything seems fine.

The Gumball Rally is directed and written by Charles Bail. It stars Michael Sarrazin, Norman Burton, Raúl Juliá, Tim McIntire and Gary Busey. Music is by Dominic Frontiere and cinematography by Richard C. Glouner. Plot sees an assortment of car enthusiasts embark on a no holds barred coast-to-coast race from New York to California......with irate LAPD Lieutenant Roscoe and the force out to apprehend them.

Upon its release The Gumball Rally would have seemed fresh and exciting, leading off a sub-genre of car race films based on the exploits of auto eccentrics racing coast-to-coast, its impact has been diluted by those that followed it. However, as sure as it isn't as much fun as the most popular of them all, The Cannonball Run, it certainly has the better stunts, better location work and a plethora of better cars. Clearly helmed with love and affection by Charles Bail, film isn't about story (Vis-à-vis Cannonball Run), it's an ode to speedsters and excitement, to freedom and camaraderie, all splendidly package by Bail and his team. A ream of good character actors file in for the roles, with Julia and McIntire particularly standing out, while Bail uses his camera with skill for aerials, close ups and tracking shots to put the viewer right into the heart of the action. The comedy is well placed within the heart of the drama, and crucially those sequences are funny.

An enjoyable speedy romp that never lets its foot off the pedal, The Gumball Rally is essential viewing for car fans and fans of 70s care free abandon. 7.5/10

I have a dedicated region 1 DVD player so I have no problems with discs of this type on play, But, all the region 1 discs that I have had up to now will play on my Blu Ray players, but this disc will not. Enough of the technical aspects, The GUMBALL RALLY is probablly the best of its type and has never been bettered, the print quality of this disc is superb, the other side of the disc has not got the same quality in either sense, if it where possible to give it a MINUS 5 I would do so, and to my mind a stick on label would have been more interesting instead of all these worn out hasbeen actors with juvenile scripts
