Pleasantly surprised and left waiting for the next book!

I read this book thanks to the recommendation of a friend. I'm typically quite reluctant to purchase a book written by an inexperienced author, but the subject is one of great interest to me. I was pleasantly surprised by Mr. Scanlan's writing and look forward to his follow-up book. In "Of Guilt and Innocence," he successfully wove a tale containing a common thread linking the lives of a handful of different individuals. Not all writers can pull this off. I also appreciated his simple style of writing. He does an excellent job of showing the reader instead of losing them by telling. I noted a few minor errors that the editor missed, and though the story is wrapped up neatly in the end, I found it a bit abrupt. Mr. Scanlan's experience as a police officer makes his descriptions of crimes and crime scenes very believable, and his characters easily visible in the mind's eye. My hope is that he continues to hone his gift for writing, and dives right into a second attempt. If you are a fan of crime novels, peg your hopes on this up-and-coming writer. I believe he has much more to tell and has found his voice.
There are several reasons I loved this book

Yay! There are several reasons I loved this book. The plot and characters were interesting and well developed and believable. Something very important to me, as somebody with a little knowledge of police procedure, this author got it right as only a police officer could. From the small things such as calling the it the sheriff's office instead of the sheriff's department to the correct procedure of not pointing a gun in the air "Miami Vice" style when it's drawn, I didn't have to mentally correct the description on the page. It was well worth the hours of my vacation I spent reading it. I hope there will be more!

I have never taken the time to write a review but I felt compelled to do so after reading this fabulously written book. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I could. It put it down, it was a real page turner. The character development is amazing! I felt like I knew every character inside and out. The plot was complex but easy to follow and very realistic and true to,life. It was sometimes hard to remember that this was fiction and not true crime. This isn't a first time novel, it is so well written, the author is truly gifted. Please, write more books like this

It's an easy read and very riveting. I learned a lot of practical things about staying safe and thoroughly enjoyed the story line and excellent character development. I've ordered the author's second book and recommended that my library stock his books. You'll be glad that you've read this book.
