What do South American politicians believe, and why do people keep voting them in? This is an uncompromising assault on the folk-myths and self-pitying economic and political culture of much of South America. It looks at the claims, and explains why they are rubbish, and why pursuing the policies being espoused will lead to ruin, does lead to ruin, and has led to ruin. It would be easy for Europeans to think they are different, but the sad fact is that similar policies have been attempted in Europe (and elsewhere), with the same predictable result. Here in the UK, the leaders of significant parties have proposed just such policies, and are still doing so. Past failures of such policies are attributed to them being applied incorrectly, or due to the action of some outside agency hell-bent on preventing their success (most recently - The Bankers). Because it is about "foreigners" rather than "Us", it might allow people to think more clearly about the fallacies behind the claims and proposals, and so perhaps see why they are, in fact, rubbish. To my mind, this should be a set book in schools, but the "progressives" and teaching unions would never allow that to happen.

There is a widespread view in latin america that american imperialism is the root of latin american underdevelopment. this book shows how common in latin american this view is and argues against it. the title suggests a bit of anger and a bit of irony and that is indeed what you find. the book was written in the 90's, but sadly, it is still very relevant.

During my employ with Nortel Networks, I had the opportunity to travel throughout the Caribbean and Latin American region.

Cuban born, I sincerely looked forward to visiting the countries I have read so much about and to interact with the cultures that evolved from our Spanish ancestors, or from the incursions of England and Portugal into our region.

During one of my trips, I bought this book "The Guide to the Perfect Latin American Idiot" and I could not put it down because it made me ponder on the reasons why our countries face such poverty, lack of opportunity and our people go through such trials and tribulations, waking up only to find that a new form of government is in charge of our future.

As I read, I annotated the pages with the "intuitive" thoughts that the authors provoked and upon return another executive asked to borrow the book and it was never returned, so now that I am rather involved in local politics, I decided to re-read the book and purchased it through Amazon, our favorite Internet outlet.

The authors delve into the reasons why we remain as an "under-developed" region, connecting the dots as to how our cultural values, our set of beliefs, and our religion impact the way we think and behave to the detriment of success, if the acquisition of material possessions and great wealth is the measure, of course.

If you are interested in the region for business, or simply want to learn about Latin America, or if you are from the region and want to do a rather introspective exercise in understanding our attitudes with regards to our evolution, this book is certainly a good read!

They take you through the more simplistic view of Latin American history that seems to pervade the minds of most Latin Americans and many outside of Latin America. They use pretty good examples to put to rest many of the misconceptions and it is well written. I would recommend this book if you are interested in Latin American history.
