Amazon Review

The Guide To Getting It On marks a new generation in the story of sex manuals. The 1960s saw a new sexual revolution leading to the publication of The Joy Of Sex, which has graced many millions of bookshelves. This is a guide to come from the 1990s, now published in the United Kingdom for the first time in its third edition.

The Guide To Getting It On is frank, explicit, humorous and informative. Like that other popular guide to emerge from the nineties, the computer manual, this is a pretty weighty and wordy book. And, like the computer manual, it is divided into very specific chapters, 51 in total, and is equipped with a comprehensive glossary and index. The chapters cover all manner of kinks and curves. Is anal sex your thing? Then there's a chapter on it. Want to learn about vaginal massage? There's a chapter on it. Oral sex, masturbation, sex toys--it's all covered.

But this guide isn't just about the sexual mechanics. There are sensitively written chapters here about the nature of eroticism and fantasy. There is good advice for first timers with sections such as "On The Penis", "What's Inside a Girl", and "The How-To Part", which stress the importance of emotional consideration and consent. There are also brief explanations on how to recognise the early indications of breast, testicular, and prostate cancer.

Each chapter is illustrated with cartoon-style line drawings, complete with the occasional witty caption, and with first-hand accounts of how people like to "get it on". These confessionals are reassuringly honest and sometimes touching. They elevate this guide from a "how to", to a "have done and it's great!" The depth of coverage in this guide is as comprehensive as it can be without breaching any laws. How do you like it? Well if it's legal it's likely to be covered by The Guide To Getting It On. It's fair to say that no matter what your level of sexual experience is, or how much of a great lover you might think you are, this book is guaranteed to put a smile on your face--and perhaps someone else's. --Iain Robinson

Review

"You've never read a manual as warm, friendly, liberating, thorough, and potentially sex-life-changing as the Guide to Getting It On! Neither had anyone in our office--which may be why our copies keep disappearing." -- Oprah Magazine "If you're going to own just one instructional book about sex, this is the one. Funny, hip, and informative, it's packed with advice about what to put where and covers every topic a couple could possibly be curious about." -- Women's Health Magazine--Sex Awards "In our vast library of sex books, this is by far and away the most human, enlightening and entertaining read of the lot. I'll be recommending it until my keyboard wears out." -- Cosmopolitan Magazine UK "One of the few books about sex that you actually want to sit down and read." -- Playboy Magazine --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Although very occasionally verging on the cooler-than-thou, this book is a pretty damn thorough description of most thing that make people go squelch.
Mainly, although not exclusively directed at heterosexuals, it's a page-turner of another sort - or at least was for me, as I wanted to see what they'd left out.
The answer to that is not a lot. Most every ordinary position, quite a few extraordinary ones, and a lot of well written stuff that sounds like it was penned by people who not only have had but actively enjoy sex, rather than dry medicinal prose.
The illustrations are a laugh too, a million miles away from the ghastly beardy man of the 'Joy of Sex' and its many imitators.
All-in-all, probably one of the best sex manuals on the market, and don't think that sex manuals are just for 'beginners'. You may not learn much new, but if you enjoy sex, and like talking about and discussing sex, you'll probably like this book, especially if you can share it with that certain special someone.

This is an excellent book with a superb tone. It answers every question I ever had about sex and all the questions I didn't know I had!
It's very practical in it's approach but conveys the information with a light touch. While recognising that sex is fun there seems to be an underlying feeling, which I liked, that sex is about more than the physical act of two people 'getting it on'.
The illustrations are detailed without being too graphic and nearly all feature a cat which again gives the book, which in size is a heavy weight, a lighter feel.
All in all I'd highly recommend it, especially if you can read it in conjunction with someone you enjoy 'getting it on' with.

I would never imagine that I will enjoy reading a sex book so much! This book is very comprehensive covering topics ranging from anatomy, nipples, handjobs, porn and basically everything you can imagine. It has loads of technical information as well as consultants and normal people opinions and experiences. It does not feel like you were reading a textbook, but rather like you were chatting with a really funny friend. I would imagine it's good for both beginners and advanced in bed as well as both male and female. You can really find out a lot about each other and yourself. I would recommend every single person on the planet to read this.

Very good book - straight talking and a great deal more explicit than others. Makes you think a bit more laterally about other aspects of sex rather than just doing it. Very good explaining a woman's point of view with some interesting analogies.

Don't pass this one by because of the jocular, "youth" jargon of the chapter titles or the comic book style illustrations, this book really has some important information to pass on. More than that, those who have taken a little bit of time to read some this book realize that the style of the titles and art employed wonderfully well to expose those catch-phrases and idealized images that float throughout our culture playfully. Make no mistake, this book pushes past such stereotypes to take a broader and less judgemental view of sex than most other available texts--it is precisely by returning to address specifically the misconceptions commonly held about sex. Also, ideas about sex are rarely stated in "answer form" (i.e. "This is what people think, this is what is really true.") but rather keeps the discussions about various issues more objective by bringing in several viewpoints. There are no "answers" about sex, but this book will help you catch yourself where you have been deceived by culture or have deceived yourself. Congratulations to this team for putting together a book that keeps to the topic of discussing of informing about many key issues of sexuality rather than prescribing for the reader a particular sexual worldview.

A very useful book of the ins and outs of sex and such, but a bit of a disappointment in terms of how it politicises sex a little. The short discussion on religion and homosexuality wasn't really necessary nor did it make much sense. A touch too much soapbox, really. But only a touch.
Other than that, though, I doubt you'll find a better written (or, indeed, better-illustrated) manual for those personal situations. Even if you're not in a relationship right now, or not at that stage of it, this'll be useful in planning ahead. Remember, those who fail to plan, plan to fail.
I think this is one most (if not all) readers will enjoy. At so many levels. :-)

This book is truly marvellous and readable. It contains no nonsense information about sex, with no straight or gay bias. The quotes from readers about their own experiences are, at the very least, interesting, and at best worth their weight in gold. There are no illustrations of bearded sex guruhs but rather useful down-to-earth information presented in a serious yet entertaining way. I am enjoying enlightenment chapter by chapter, and I thought I knew a thing or two!

A veneer of humour, and very good humour it is, hides an informative and educational reference book for both young and old.
