Review

A gem. Buy it - even if you haven't got a garden, it makes a great general wildlife guide. -- Birdwatching, July 2008

Lewington has produced the definitive field guide to the little patches of Britain that mean more to us than any other. -- BBC Wildlife, July 2008

This, for my money, is one of the best-illustrated field guides there has ever been.

I was looking for a book which covered a range of wildlife you might want to identify in your garden and this is it. Myself and my 8 year old son have spent the summer pouring over this super book enjoying its beautiful illustrations and concise text. I would highly recommend this book for all ages.

This book is a must for anyone even vaguely interested in wild life. It is well presented with accurate clear beautiful illustrations and contains complete descriptions of birds, animals, insects, reptiles and other creatures you are liable tocome across in your garden. Ideal as a reference for a family home and with it you will be able to identify the pretty green beetle, unusual snail, bird or butterfly. Not only the name but other interesting facts too. Perfect for all ages it cannot be beaten. I have many reference books, but this one is a firm favourite and has always provided the answer with everything in one volume. Buy it now you will not be disappointed.

A beautifully illustrated concise guide to the various different groups of animals found in the garden. It is very handy to have a guide covering mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, spiders all in one place, even though I have specific guides covering most of these groups already.

I bought this guide mostly to enjoy the pictures, and they are very good indeed.

Two slight negatives, even though they don't really detract from the book - firstly, the selection of wildlife is necessarily limited - there are plenty of species in my suburban garden that don't feature, but that is inevitable. Second, whilst the mammal and reptile pictures are good, they are somewhat overshadowed by the insect and bird pictures, which are exceptional.

All in all, well worth a place on anyone's bookshelf, especially at the modest purchase price.

At last there is an excellent and very comprehensive wildlife book at a reasonable price, that covers a much greater variety of garden wildlife than other similar books. As well as useful clear pictures enabling identification, there are other unusual pictures (eg a Marmalade hoverfly eating an aphid, and a dragonfly larva eating a tadpole) as well as having detailed and very interesting text information about all. Essential for all nature watchers and families as interesting reading, as well as a reference book. I'm buying extra copies for my grandchildren.

This is an excellent book which has been referred to many times to identify wildlife in our small garden. I also enjoyed reading the preface and introduction. The pictures are also excellent and the sizes given, specially for insects, helps for comparisons. I enjoyed using my own copy so much that I bought one on Amazon as a gift for someone else.
