Product Description

The movie starts with Raju (Dev Anand) being released from jail, and then the story runs in flashback. Raju was a freelance guide, who earned his living by taking tourists to historic sites. One day, a wealthy and aging archaeologist, Marco (Kishore Sahu) comes to the city with his young wife Rosie (Waheeda Rehman), the daughter of a courtesan. Marco wants to do some research on the caves outside the city and hires Raju as his guide. He discovers a new cave and ignores Rosie. While Marco devotes himself to the discovery of the cave, Raju takes Rosie on a tour and appreciates her dancing ability and innocence. He learns about Rosie's background as a daughter of a prostitute and how Rosie has achieved respectability as the wife of Marco but at a terrible cost. She had to give up her passion of dancing since it was unacceptable to Marco. Meanwhile, Rosie tries to commit suicide by consuming poison. Marco, upon knowing the incidence returns from the caves to see Rosie and is furious with Rosie after seeing her alive. He tells her that her act of committing suicide was a drama, otherwise she would have consumed more sleeping pills so that she could really have died. Upon returning to the caves which were discovered, Rosie learns that Marco is spending time and enjoying the company of a native tribal girl. She is enraged at Marco and both indulge in a serious heated discussion, which conclude with Rosie leaving the caves, and she once again wants to end her life.

Format: DVD
Waheeda Rehman is perfectly cast as Rosy ,an amateur dancer married to an old boring archaeologist, played by the eccentric KIishore sahu in an unhappy sham unison ,on one of their explorative trips to the mystical sites she meets a flamboyant and rather handsome young guide ,raju [dev anand ],and they find romance and love in each others arms leading to an unconventional relationship between them, where the husband refuses to divorce her in spite of her insistence and adultery becomes a virtue and blessing in disguise .

Nevertheless Raju and Rosy initiate a 'vaudeville dance troupe-theatre' with Rosy as the main attraction ,which becomes a super success and money and fame starts to pour in ,while you see how this changes the realtionship between the two lovers as Rosy starts to despise the honest Raju who has metamorphosised into her cheating manager almost cum pimp and is indulging in other vices, while she is has become just a gold mine for his indulgence .

The philosophy of materialistic change ruining humane values is subtly but dramatically insinuated without any sermons and it becomes a revelation into human demeanour, and as we are introduced in second act to drought struck Indian masses praying for a miracle, where rain becomes a metaphor for human relationship with the divine faith in culmination; perfectly merging pulp art with cultural emancipation.

I advise you to give a complete miss to the cluttered English version and watch the Indian version with subtitles .

The 'Snake Dance' by Waheeda alone is worth the price of the dvd.

One of the best movies from indian cinema received 5 filmfare awards and a national award for best film. Beautifully directed again by Vijay Anand and well acted by Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman and not forgetting Kishore Sahu.
Fantastic music by late S.D.Burman and a good story by R.K Narayan. Waheeda did some of her best dances in this movie. The movie was also made in English.
Watch and ENJOY.

I watched this film many many years ago, but never forgot it and was delighted to find it on Amazon. Unusually for a Hindi film, particularly of that time, it adopts an understanding approach to romantic love, even if out of wedlock, and recognises the need for emotional closeness. It also has some incredible songs and dance sequences, and Waheeda Rahman looks so beautiful! Never predictable, always challenging your expectations and totally realistic despite the unusual storyline. A truly great film.
