Product description

Review

Shantideva's "Way of the Bodhisattva" is an essential Buddhist text. It was written in the 8th century by a Buddhist monk, Shantideva, born in South India, who was an accomplished meditation master and an important scholar. It offers ten chapters on which one should focus and meditate in order to develop a fully awakened mind. Written fully in verse, this text is, apart from being an invaluable guide to enlightenment, a work of art that surmounts the time and the place it was written. The fact that Buddhists from every tradition respect it and use it, even today, is another indication of its value and unprecedented preciousness. Steven Batchelor's translation of this volume by Shantideva is considered to be the best one out there, and it is highly recommended. Like every work of poetry, this book is not supposed to be read in one sit-down, but it should be studied, thought upon, and used as an inspiration for further meditation. This edition is properly bound with a useful commentary that includes both a short glossary and notes. For a further, more detailed commentary, one should look for the "The Ocean of Good Explanation" by Thogme Zangpo, refered by the LIBRARY OF TIBETAN WORKS AND ARCHIVES. In addition, a Commentary on the "37 Practices of a Bodhisattva" by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama is provided by the same publisher. The translation of Ngülchu Thokme Sangpo's (14th century) lucid exposition of Shantideva's "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" is at the moment under development by THE LIBRARY OF TIBETAN CLASSICS. --By Art_em_Is_free on 24 Jan. 2010
