So, having already seen the film in HD, I was very much looking forward to the UHD version, as this is the ultimate home version of the film and the version the director spent most time perfecting.
So, I wasn't disappointed and from the outset it was obvious this version is worth the extra money. IMO 4K isn't the big step forward here, but the high dynamic range (HDR) makes all the difference, with a much greater range of contrast, and colours that really pop when needed. With a film so packed with high quality CGI, they have really made this a stunning visual masterpiece, even if it isn't true 4K and wasn't filmed natively in 4K, it is still a stunning conversion and really shows up what the new technology is capable of.
For reference my set is a 65" Sony XD93 and a Sony X800 UHD player.
PS - the film is a masterpiece too!
This movie is a very fun superhero film. It does not provide us with a very heavy storyline, the premise is quite simple and best of it all, it’s absolutely funny!. My partner and I truly enjoyed this movie as we could’nt stop laughing at several of the scenes and there were even some emotional moments as well which were lovely to watch at the end. I love the chemistry among the Guardians, and I loved Baby Groot's very cute and adorable behavior. I also loved the opening scene which my partner thought was very cool and kept going back to watch again and again.
In addition to the brilliant chemistry among the stars, I also felt that Mantis' character was fun to watch, especially whenever she was interacting with Drax. In this sequel, it was also surprising to see Drax' extremely funny side and hilarious comments. Both Yondu and Nebula also had much larger and important roles in this movie compared to Volume 1. There was even a surprise new character played by Sylvester Stallone whom I understand would be having a larger role in future Marvel movies.
Apart from those fun interactions and the nice light story, the movie itself was not the type full of action scenes. There were a few spread out through the movie. The sound effects were good, the effects involving Baby Groot and Rocket were awesome, but the CGI effects during the scenes in the Ego planet where looked extremely computerized. One thing that was quite curious for me is the trailer to this movie was already showing Kurt Russel portraying Peter's father, which I thought would be best kept hidden to avoid a major plot spoiler! But then as we continued watching it, I realized that it was more like a part that was supposed to intrigue us.
I personally felt that this movie was better than Volume 1, in term of the story, comedy and characterizations. And for those of you who knew that Marvel's movies would have some end credit scenes, better wait till the very end, since this film has got not 1, not 2 not even 3, but 5 post credit scenes altogether!
So if you enjoyed the first volume, you will definitely enjoy this one even more. I would recommend you to watch the first one before seeing this one to have a better understanding on the movie. If you are a fan of a much heavier plot based/action based/ morale based superhero movie, than this one may not suit you, but I am confident that you would still be entertained watching this one!
The storytelling did felt a little stretched at times and overwhelmed by the stunning special effects. But the character development continues to be fun, with some great one-liners and team chemistry. The characters have grown into a family of sorts, with some great dysfunctional banter. I loved the retro soundtrack, especially the ELO and Cat Stevens segments which bookend the film wonderfully.
But the real star of the film is undoubtedly Baby Groot, who is adorable and steals every scene he's in. I never expected I'd feel so protective or moist-eyed about a tiny CGI root vegetable, but that's how well they wove him into the story. The little sproutling has become a protective focus of the whole team and right from the start he has the audience in the palm of his tiny hands, all [g]rooting for him.
