A lot of details about how it happened - units, attacks, strategies, etc, but too little of the ordinary soldier's experiences for my taste. However, as a history book, it does all it sets out to achieve. A an excellent overview of the campaign.

Long long book but it does tell the story it's supposed too and for anyone (like me) with just a rudimentary idea of WWII campaigns it lays it all on the table.

This would be the worst quality hardcover book I have ever seen. Absolute disgrace and an insult to the author. The pages look like they were photocopied on el cheapo paper and hard bound. The photo quality is terrible. Literary licensing. Can someone please close these people down. If I was the author I would be so pis_ed. And where are the fold out maps? Well, you have been warned. What is being done about this scam?

Footnotes, maps, and charts are mentioned in the text, but not included in this edition.
Makes for difficult reading when the text refers to specific items in non-existent illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big picture down to the details 30 Sept. 2010
By Terry Hale - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This official publication was well researched and well written. Its treatment of Cartwheel touches on nearly every perspective of the campaign. This covers broad and narrow strategic decisions by both sides, inter-theatre competition for resources, and issues advanced all the way to Roosevelt's resolution. Details are also provided on the effects of beach width and slope, swamp locations, bomb and artillery expenditures, runway construction, and jungle fighting.
This book was commissioned to be an accurate educational resource for future professional officers and historians, as well as other readers and students. Printed in 1959, it is not readily available and those who own it should treasure it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for those interested in personal stories. 3 May 2013
By Robert A. Hains - Published on Amazon.com

But for those that wish to get an understanding of how the USMC and US Army fought and won against the Japanese SNLF and Army this is a very good book. Good detail concerning the critical actions on land which led to the a victory that was a critical turning point in the war in the Pacific. And good statistical information.

This books is a strategic account of the battle for Guadalcanal.
The book concentrates on the land battle. Details of

Integrating the book with "Victory at Guadalcanal" (R.Lee) you can have a full view of this long and bloody operation.
Important for Pacific war fans
