One of the wonders of modern life is the ability to re-discover old favorites, the first book in this seris was a favorite of mine when it was first published. I discovered there were sequals and with a few clicks was able to secure them for my reading pleasure. They may be aimed at teenagers but I still enjoyed reading this book. It was really nice to be able to find out what happened to some of my all time favorite characters.

Fantasy following on from The Crystal Gryphon. Once again told alternately from the point of view of the two main characters.
Kerovan - he of the cloven hooves and amber eyes - journeys again into the Waste to find allies for the war against the Hounds of Alizon. He is tormented by dreams and thoughts of his "otherness" and has left his Lady Joisan behind in Norsdale trying desperately to put her from him as he feels unworthy of her.
Joisan has other ideas and follows after him.

How their problems are resolved in the fight against evil is the matter of this book and its thrilling climax.

Although this can be read alone, it's actually the second in the exciting Gryphon trilogy, following on from 'The Crystal Gryphon'. Andre Norton creates a vividly authentic other world and tells a gripping tale of magic, adventure and love.

I love the books of Andre Norton - with very few exceptions, they are so consistently good - well-written characters, intricate plotting, and when she's writing of something out of the common way it feels alien. She has strong, no-nonsense women characters and people act like people do, not like literary characters do.

This one is consistent in quality with the rest. Although it is a sequel to Crystal Gryphon, it can be read as a standalone book (I haven't read Crystal Gryphon yet). Kerovan thinks he is unworthy of the Lady Joisan because of his mixed blood and physical "imperfections", and leaves; Joisan has little reason to stay and much to go after him. She follows him into the Wastes, where assorted trouble finds each of them, and where they must find each other.

If you like Norton you'll love this; if you haven't tried her you should still enjoy it anyway. Can recommend.

another beautifully written story from Andre Norton, always well worth reading, complex characters and magic treated as something everyone accepts as part of their lives, but still scary and to be treated with respect. Well written, at least I think so, as the transcription was so bad it was difficult to work out what word should have been there rather than the gibberish entered by the transcriber, random letters scattered around, often a capital J instead of an l. Do people get paid for this? If so they should give the money back!
