A small 80 page guide of useful information. It cover compost, techniques, equipment and 14 pages on plants to grow from seed. The latter though has no more information on each plant and there are not many plants, than on a packet of seed. The book is very inexpensive but RHS Propaging Plants covers all this in 300 pages with much more information including seeds, division and cuttings. All in all Propagaing Plants page per penny is much better value so do yourself a favour and buy this instead of Growing from Seed. However pictures are clear, text is easy to understand so it has to be 4 stars for me

This RHS practical guide covers growing from seed. I really like these guides. They cover an awful lot in a relatively slim volume, and I've found that there is a lot to be learned from each one. They are written in an easy to understand way, and not only give some great new ideas, but also show how to execute some of these ideas.

This particular guide covers:

* plants grown from seed
* raising plants from seed
* collecting and extracting seeds
* buying, storing, and priming seeds
* the environment and growing medium
* seeds and seedlings indoors
* hardening off and planting out
* growing ferns from spores
* seeds and seedlings outdoors
* thinning and transplanting
* plants to grow from seed
* annuals and perennials
* vegetables and herbs
* perennials and bulbous plants
* trees, shrubs, and climbers

Prior to getting this book I had not grown any plants from seeds. It was all new to me, and this book is a great introduction. I'm sure that there are longer and more in depth books out there, but this one is more than adequate for my needs. I am growing in confidence and the book is written in such a way as to be very understandable with great pictures and illustrations.

As one would expect from RHS, this little book is invaluable to novices, like me, who want to have a go at growing their own plants from seed. It is quite detailed and the illustrations are very helpful.

As a enthusiastic, but amateur gardener I always turn to RHS publications for clear, uncomplicated written/photographic/drawn advice and instructions. I haven't been disappointed.
