About the Author

Lawrence D. Hills (1911-1991) was a British horticulturalist, journalist, and writer who founded the Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA), now known as Garden Organic. Hills' research into the Russian Comfrey plant introduced him to Doubleday's work in this field, work which Hills built upon and furthered. Gardening correspondent of the Observer for eight years, Hills' books included Fertility Without Fertilisers, Down to Earth Gardening, and Organic Gardening, but he was best known for Grow Your Own Fruit and Vegetables, which became a canonical text for gardeners and commercial organic growers.

While looking for a veg book for my son, was amazed to see no-one had reviewed this, the original and best of the organic gardening books, paving the way for people like Joy Larkcom. Packed with a wealth of information on all aspects of growing food, and clearly and succinctly written, this is a book to read for pleasure as well as a working handbook. Laurence Hills was the pioneer of organic growing in this country, and the founder of what is now Garden Organic. Both experienced and inexperienced gardeners can learn from one of nature's gentlemen in this book, that I still refer to every season.

Dear Lawrence Hills was the man who started the Henry Doubleday Research Association which morphed into Garden Organic at Ryton. This was the book that turned me onto gardening in 1976 and I am now buying a second copy as mine was used and lent out so much it has fallen to bits. LH has a truly unique style with which he manages to interweave practical advice, useful tips, nutritional information and organic philosophy which is really inspiring as well as useful. He was a great man, a pioneer who devoted his life to good sense and gardening cheer. I could not recommend this book enough to anyone who is new to growing your own and anyone who still gets a thrill from it after many years.
