I first heard about Mrs Fun when kd lang, one of my favourite singers, provided lead vocals on one of the tracks of their 1991 album, 'They are not a trio'. I thoroughly enjoyed that album, and so I started collecting their work. There are two members of the Mrs Fun team. Connie Grauer plays keyboards, and Kim Zick plays the drums. They are both very talented musicians, and I think that the 'Groove' album, which was recorded in 1998, is probably the best showcase for their talents. Mrs Fun have occasionally recorded Thelonious Monk numbers, (Monk is my favourite jazz musician), and the Monk influence is clearly recognisable in Grauer's keyboard playing. The music is probably best categorised as contemporary jazz, although there are certainly a lot of other musical influences present here. As the name of the band would suggest, their music is fun, and I can heartily recommend this album.
