Product Description

About the Author

Sophie Ranald is the youngest of five sisters. She was born in Zimbabwe and lived in South Africa until an acute case of itchy feet brought her to London in her mid-20s. As an editor for a customer publishing agency, Sophie developed her fiction-writing skills describing holidays to places she’d never visited. In 2011, she decided to disregard all the good advice given to aspiring novelists and attempt to write full-time. A Groom with a View is Sophie’s second novel, and she also writes for magazines and online about food, fashion and running. She lives in south-east London with her amazing partner Hopi and Purrs, their adorable little cat. Follow Sophie on Twitter @SophieRanald, or like her Facebook page for updates and random wittering about the cuteness of Purrs (there will be pics! Even videos!).

Pippa is happy with the life she leads; she has a great job as a chef and she has the perfect relationship with her boyfriend Nick. Everyone always mentions how great the two of them are together, and Pippa knows she doesn’t need a ring on her finger as proof of their love for each other. Yet, after a few too many drinks, Pippa suddenly finds herself engaged to Nick and before she knows it she’s answering questions about invitations, cakes and wedding locations. In order to make things as easy as possible for Pippa, Nick decides to do most of the planning and organising himself, but when Nick’s mother appears on the scene and the wedding slowly seems to take over their entire lives, things between Nick and Pippa only seem to be getting worse instead of better.

Every now and again I come across a great chick lit novel which is thoroughly enjoyable from the first until the very last page, which has an entertaining storyline at its core, combined with a fabulous cast of characters; basically, a book I didn’t want to put down but at the same time didn’t want to end, and one I’ll be recommending to others in the months to come. ‘A Groom With a View’ is definitely one of those novels and I’m so glad Sophie Ranald contacted me for a possible review of her second book. I loved the storyline, not just because it’s about weddings (a topic I have a soft spot for) but because it gives its own original twist to a chick lit wedding story. Pippa is a great heroine; she doesn’t want a big and glamorous wedding, she just wants to be with Nick and no wedding is needed to put a stamp on their love for one another. I really enjoyed reading about a man who takes on all the wedding planning, and the female character who tries to deal with this.

Oh boy, what a great read. Well written, nicely twisting storyline, cleverly observed characters - the MIL in particular seemed oh so familiar - and really well paced. I finished it in one sitting, the perfect antidote to a stressful day. Even better than the first one? I think so.

Sophie Ranald has nailed this genre. She has given us another heroine who could be one of us, not a pathetic mouse needing a makeover which has been the cliche of commercial women's fiction. Pippa is funny, sweet, confident, ambitious and multidimensional. Her back story - and indeed those of the other players - is utterly convincing. There are no casual tropes here - even the evil mother-in-law (and be warned, she's a doozie!) is subtly drawn avoiding caricature.

The strong characterisation and well paced plot makes this a read-in-one-sitting novel which you'll be recommending to anyone who's even been or known a bride/groom-zilla.

Fabulous! Pippa's tale is endearing, romantic, compulsive, and very compelling. This book is funny, clever and enjoyable from beginning to end. I couldn't wait to find out what happened to pippa and nick. The characters are all so likeable you're rooting for each one. I think everyone who has planned, or been close to someone planning a wedding will recognise much of this book with a wry smile!

This is a super read. Like a skilled wedding photographer, the author doesn't line up her characters in a row and have them pose for the camera. Instead, she captures them in a naturalistic way, so we see both happy and sad tears, evil grins, wistful nostalgia and looks of lust. There's an avoidance of cliche and commitment to honesty that make this book a standout from its genre.

I read Ms Ranald's first book and loved it so I couldn't wait for the second one. When I read the "blurb" I wasn't so keen, it seemed like I could already guess what would happen and I felt annoyed with the mother In law to be before I even started the book. However, I had pre ordered it so I took my kindle on holiday and started the book. How wrong could I be? By the time I was into the second chapter I was hooked! The characters are, as before, so well written and three dimensional that no one is all good or all bad, they are like real people. I even found myself sympathising with the MIL to be in parts. The story had a few unexpected twists and turns which kept me glued until the last page and I found I enjoyed this book just as much as the first.

I find that quite a few authors can produce one good book but their second (and subsequent) books are often a disappointment. Well done Ms Ranald for keeping up the high standard of your first book, I was certainly not disappointed and I am very much looking forward to reading your next offering (which I hope will be soon!)

I was delighted to see that Sophie Ranald had published her second book as I found the first a refreshing entry into the genre. Second books can be hard to do but I found this even better than the first and makes me look forward to what the author will produce as she gets fully into her stride.

The characters were sufficiently likeable that you wanted to care from them but there were no saints. The story skips along nicely keeping you entertained and gripped and I was sad when it came to the end. It was refreshingly free from "size angst" - you didn't hear a great deal about the main character's looks and she wasn't obsessed with food/diet/exercise. I never felt patronised or talked down to, nor was most of it so far removed from real life that you couldn't relate to it.

A recommended holiday read.
