    Nachdem Geert Mak vor ca. 10 Jahren das Buch "In Europa" geschrieben hatte und uns mit vielen, vielen Beispiele gezeigt hatte, wieviel Gemeinsames wir in Europa trotz der langen Trennung durch den Eisernen Vorhang finden können, zeigt er nun eine wahre Ansammlung von Problemen und Krisen dieses gleichen Kontinents. Leider ist er dabei wiederum sehr überzeugend in der Darstellung und darum für den Leser tief deprimierend.
    Schriftstellerisch wunderbar, inhaltlich aber gnadenlos in der Aneinanderreihung all der ungelösten Fragen Europas.

    Zunächst muss ich sagen, dass "In Europa" und "Amerika" zu meinen Lieblingsbüchern gehören. In diesem Buch führt er seinen angenehmen Schreibstil fort und erzählt sehr umfassend über die letzten 20 Jahre. Was mich massiv gestört hat, deshalb nur 3 Sterne: Er gibt nur Standardgeschchtschreibungen der Regierungen und anderen Organsisationen des öffentlichen Lebens wieder ohne jegliche abweichende Kritik bzw. eigener Meinung. Das könnte man als objektiv bezeichnen. Wenn es jedoch um Türkei, Russland, China usw. geht, sind die Standardbösen schnell gefunden. Es wird 1 zu 1 die gegenwärtige Mainstream Einschätzung verwendet. Ein wenig mehr Mut von Herr Mak hätte ich mir schon gewünscht. Insbesondere weil man wieder mehr Menschen brauch, die teils abweichende Haltungen haben und trotzdem nicht gleich als Verschwörungstheoretiker gelten. Herr Mak hat hier den einfachen Weg genommen. Trotzdem ist sein Schreibstil und seine Fähigkeit enorm viel interessante Inhalte in ein Buch zu packen für mich einmalig.

    Kein großes Buch, aber ein dickes Buch hat Geert Mak über Europa geschrieben. Sehr kenntnisreich und auf hohem literarischen Niveau arbeitet sich der Autor an den europäischen Krisen ab. Eurokrise, Bankenkrise, Flüchtlingskrise, Brexit, Ukrainekrise und Nationalismus werden akribisch untersucht und verschaffen mir als Zeitgenosse einen guten Überblick über das, was die letzten 20 Jahre in der Tagespresse diskutiert wurde. Mir fehlt eine durchgängige Struktur. Was sehr interessant als Reisebericht in Kirkenes startet, endet in einem neidvollen Blick auf die Nachgeborenen, die aus der Distanz dann wohl den besseren Überblick haben dürften. Dazwischen reihen sich die Essays. Dabei ist weder die Chronologie eingehalten, die in den Kapitelüberschriften versprochen wird, noch bearbeitet der Autor konsequent einen Themenkomplex. Der Buchtitel „Große Erwartungen“ hätte doch die Struktur vorgegeben: Worin bestanden denn die Erwartungen, mit denen man das neue Jahrtausend begrüßte? Sie waren so vielfältig und widersprüchlich wie das Europa der 27 Mitglieder. Die Enttäuschungen waren unvermeidlich.
