Review

Mesmerizing ... shiver-inducing, of the delicious variety. This is what fantasy is for (Laini Taylor, author of DAUGHTERS OF SMOKE AND BONE NEW YORK TIMES)

A New York Times bestseller, it's like The Hunger Games meets Potter meets Twilight meets Lord Of The Rings meets Game Of Thrones; basically epic magical fantasy but completely for grown-ups. (STYLIST)

When I closed the covers of this book, late at night, I drifted into a vivid dream bursting with midnight blue keftas and beautiful - but blinding - white light. Leigh Bardugo is a master storyteller, who draws you into her richly-imagined world and refuses to release you... even after you've turned the last page. Shadow and Bone has occupied my thoughts - day and night - ever since I began it (FEED ME BOOKS NOW)

Shadow and Bone is YA fantasy exactly how I like it: deep, epic and full of action and adventure. I fell in love with the story when I was only a few chapters in, and the many twists and turns that followed kept me hooked right until the end. I'm really glad I read this book and I'm even more glad that I have the sequel sat waiting for me. I have no idea where Leigh Bardugo is going with her story, but I can't wait to find out. Read this if you're a fan of fantasy - you won't be disappointed! (WONDROUS READS)

I can use one word to describe this book and that is "powerful". Powerful because it's original. Powerful because it's eye catching. Powerful because it makes you feel all the emotions that are mentioned in the English dictionary. And powerful because it's made me have a whole new outlook and something to look forward to in the future of YA. (DARKREADERS)

Overall, I loved everything about this book, with there being some seriously unexpected plot twists that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I could hardly put this book down, and am thoroughly looking forward to reading the following books in the trilogy. My only slight complaint is that the book was too short, I wanted more to read! (BOOK CHICK CITY)

This book really hooked me, I read it for hours on end just letting the magical story come to life in my mind, it was incredible and I LOVED IT!... The Gathering Dark is a very unique book which will leave you wanting more... it is one of the best books I've ever read. (Read, Write and Read Some More)

....Brilliantly written and truly spellbinding (MIGMAG)

The world building is slow, subtle and full. You get a really good idea of the court, and the way the magical society works. It's impossible to place exactly in time and location, but I still really enjoyed it. (DEATH, BOOKS AND TEA)

There is so much to love about this book... Leigh Bardugo knows her stuff. The pacing is superb, the climax is faultless, and the immaculate blend of fantasy, action and romance really did make this book 'unputdownable'. (REALM OF FICTION)

I think I often overuse the word 'unputdownable' when I write reviews, but this is one book which the term definitely applies to! It is dramatic and intriguing, and every twist and turn in the fantastic plot is completely unpredictable. Shadow and Bone is intoxicating, and once you have picked it up it will be glued to your hands until the last page is turned, unless, like me you fall asleep reading it. (GUARDIAN TEEN BOOKS)

Finished the first book in The Grisha series – Smoke and Bone. Although not a particular fan of the MC, Alina, who was too whiny and self-pitying for my liking (Think Fanny Price type from Mansfield Park), the world of Ravka was easy to sink into.

The Kingdom of Ravka was split in two when the shadow fold was created, a terrible swathe of blackness where deadly creatures lurk, killing those who cross its boundaries. We learn quickly about the two types of citizens to Ravka: the ordinary foot-soldiers and the Grisha.

Alina finds herself transported from the ordinary into the Grisha world and attempts to master her newly discovered powers. As well as this, she struggles to leave behind her feelings for her childhood friend, Mal and understand her new feelings for the Darkling, the leader of the Grisha.I found the middle a little lacklustre and my interest waning. Not to mention - Alina seemed to feed into this with constantly telling the reader how tired she is all the time. (An important plot point, I understand, but it grated on me.)

In truth, it is the Darkling who steals the show. It is his complex, conflicted and seductive character that you will find yourself wanting to read more about.

I'm kind of unsure of how to rate this. I wasn't entirely engrossed in it but I did like it by the end. 3 star, I think.

At the beginning of this I can't say that I saw much of a blooming relationship between Mal and Alina. They'd been friends for years and though Alina liked him romantically, Mal didn't seem to feel the same way.`

That's probably why when the Darkling started to show interest in her that I jumped on ship with it and waited for something to happen. Only when something did, I wasn't entirely convinced by it.

As for the rest of the plot with the Unsea, I found myself getting more into it the closer we got to the end of the book as deception and intrigue came about.

I definitely think it has left me intrigued enough about the outcome of the events following the ending, that I will continue the series at some point.

Really enjoyed this! Can't wait to start the second book. This book was a really well thought out introduction to the world and characters, without being to long winded. The main characters are easy to sympathize with. Highly recommend.
