This a interesting book, I cannot believe the justice in crime in those days, some people were let off murder with the slightest excuse, especially if you were a person of importance, while other poor wretches were hung or worse for the smallest of crimes, some deported for stealing a handkerchief or other minor crimes, some people had their hand burnt for a punishment. there seems no reason or rhyme to how justice in the Georgian times was meted out.

Three and a half stars, if you have already discovered the Old Bailey on line and the historic newspaper archive then this book may become tedious, if you are fairly new to the life and times of Georgian life in London then you should find this amusing and entertaining. It is a book you can dip into or out of. If you found it in a waiting room it would be a fantastic way to pass the time, to sit down and read from cover to cover might become rather repetitive.
Certainly this book will entertain and educate and has been well collated.

This grimly entertaining book is an uncomfortably enthralling revelation of man's inhumanity to man, deviousness, cunning, and malevolence in it's own right, but it really comes into its own as a primary source of great value to anyone researching the period, either way it is a compelling and rewarding read.

Not good bedtime reading. You could be hung for the most minor of offense's and no age restriction. Some very interesting stories and an insight into part of the Georgian period

A worth while read. And also very interesting.
It makes you think that life back then and now aren't that much different. Same frustration,s and disappointments and the same sad end to lives. Some times not through there own choice.

I found it really very interesting..... at times I thought the punishment too harsh, hung for steeling a hanky, at others times I could not understand how they got away with murder and only paid 1s fine.... all very odd.... which made the book interesting.
