Ridiculously over-engineered? Or the perfect case no matter where you're headed?
We think it's a little bit of both.
Simply put, Survivor is the most protective case we've ever built. Designed and tested to meet or exceed US Department of Defense Standard 810F, Griffin's Survivor Extreme-Duty Case is built from the inside out to protect your iPhone from extreme conditions ... dirt, sand, rain, shock, vibration and a host of other environmental factors.
Survivor is built on a shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame clad in rugged, shock-absorbing silicone. A built-in screen protector seals your Multi-Touch display from the outside environment, while hinged plugs seal the dock connector, headphone port, hold switch and volume controls. A detachable heavy-duty clip secures your phone to a belt or bag strap. In summary the Griffin survivor is sand proof, dust proof. It is shock and drop proof . Vibration proof and wind and rain proof! It is a must have to keep your phone protected!

It is comfortable to hold, and unlike other reviews I was able to use all hardware and software buttons. The sound, yes it was very slightly lower, but not in any way hindering its usage. but that is something you should expect for this level of protection.
I would thoroughly recommend this product, to all my friends
I work as a building materials scientist for a company in West Yorkshire, so I have a fairly physical job that requires me to get mucky and be very hands on with materials. The case was bought so my new and very shiny Samsung would be protected from all aspects of my job. So far it has yet to let me down, It has been dropped out of my car, Dropped from the side of a tanker I was sampling and it has survived being dropped in a bucket of powder cement, (Which as anybody who works with the stuff knows, it gets everywhere.) The phone is still nice and shiny all thanks to the case with its thick port covers.
To conclude, It is a brilliant case for the active Gentleman/Lady, I don't think it is really "Mil-Tec", but then again if I wanted military hardware I wouldn't be buying it off of Amazon like an amateur.
It arrived in three pieces, first the phone goes into a tough plastic shell, and then you fit the rubber outer over this; quite tricky the first time you do it but easy on subsequent fittings. Last is the plastic screen protector which on its own looks rather flimsy but when in situ does the job ok, and the screen is responsive through it, in fact on this case, none of the screen functions are affected, even the soft keys and the pull down menu for settings and alerts etc; if people complained about this before, the design must have been improved. The screen protector is difficult to fit on first try. I recommend you make sure the lugs at the bottom are located fully in the slots at the bottom of the plastic shell, by tilting it at and angle and pushing firmly before pushing the rest of the clips home. If done properly there should be no gap at the bottom of the phone between the screen protector and the rubber outer. The only issue I have is that the home key near the bottom of the case is not recessed, and so if your phone is in your pocket it may get pressed repeatedly thus needlesly activating the screen (make sure you have the automatic screen lock enabled).
Also because the case is not that easy to put on, it does not lend itself to being put on and taken off at a whim.
Overall I am happy with this case and would recommend it to anyone who wants to give protection to their S3 phone against the elements (but not scuba diving)!
Overall decent case but don't purchase unless you intend to keep the case on the phone for long periods of time and don't mind losing access to the back button.
