Ridiculously over-engineered? Or an ideal case no matter where you're headed?
Simply put, Survivor is the most protective case Griffin have ever built. Designed and tested to meet or exceed US department of defence standard 810F, Griffin's Survivor extreme-duty case is built from the inside out to protect your iPhone from extreme conditions dirt, sand, rain, shock, vibration and a host of other environmental factors.
Survivor is built on a shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame clad in rugged, shock-absorbing silicone. A built-in screen protector seals your multi-touch display from the outside environment, while hinged plugs seal the dock connector, headphone port, hold switch and volume controls. A detachable heavy-duty clip secures your iPhone to a belt or bag strap.

Over the past couple of years, I've dropped my iPhone on concrete, exposed it to dust, soaked it, (you name it ....) and it's come out unscathed every time, thanks to the Survivor cover.
The touchscreen also works fine, even through 2 layers of protection (I have a peel-off screen protector, plus the one in this cover).
As I've said, the weak point is the lens cover - it is attached by a tiny piece of rubber, which always wears out, then it is inevitably lost. That's happened with my last 3 lens covers, usually after about 7 months. I've noticed that this latest case has a slightly different design for the lens cover, a bit of a "lip", which makes it easier to open, so that may reduce the wear and tear.
To sum up, excellent protection, if you're not bothered about your iPhone looking pretty.
The Griffin Survivor looked like it offered better protection, including for the home button, and it does - but at an inconvenient cost. The case is bigger and bulkier than the Otterbox, mainly because the biggest parts are made from a less dense squishy rubber. This rubber may offer marginally better shock protection (the Otterbox wasn't actually lacking on that front) but it has a much stickier surface so creates a lot of friction when pulling the phone out of a trouser pocket, for example, and tends to attract dust and fluff. The bulky case also makes it harder to accurately tap on the edges of the phone screen (the letters P and Q on the standard keyboard, for example) because it sits so proud of the screen.
The screen protector seems robust but diminishes the sensitivity of the touch screen, which can be a problem if my hands are cold or very dry. The cover over the home button / thumb reader seems to be very moisture / dust resistant, which is good, but it also affects the iPhone's fingerprint recognition, making it much less consistent.
In short, not a bad case, but I'll be going back to Otterbox next time.
Just about a month later, I’ve stopped using and if I’m not too late, hope to return it. I thought it was worth a review though as it’s really not a bad case, but I’d recommend thinking about whether you really need something this tough!
On the plus side, it really does offer some serious protection for your phone! It fits like a glove, includes a built in screen protector and with the inclusion of even a flap to protect the camera lens. As someone who takes their phone in and out of their bag at either end of a cycle commute, I felt confident that any drops or moisture exposure would cause no harm at all. The fact that they can even cover up the fingerprint sensor and it still be functional is impressive.
The downside to all this though is that it impacts usability in most ways. The screen protect is not completely flush to the screen and affects the lovely sharpness of the phone’s display (it also makes it harder to see in bright daylight), as well as the sensitivity of the touchscreen. Things like the camera flap are a bit overkill for someone like me who just wants some protection if it drops on the floor. While the 5s is small enough for the phone not to be too enormous in the cover, there’s no denying it is bulky and the grippy rubber makes it hard to get in and out of your pocket. Most crucially of all, I could barely make one phone call without someone telling me they couldn’t hear me properly – that bulk and coverage seems to have quite a detrimental effect on call quality from my experience
For all my negatives, I’d imagine this case is worth its weight in gold for anyone who uses their phone in environments where it genuinely risks serious damage and they just want to get through the day without breaking it – this warrants a decent 3 star rating I think, despite my not be being too keen personally.
For anyone else though, the adverse effects on the user experience probably are not worth it. From looking a bit more, I think there are lighter Griffin cases available, but for now I’ve switched back to a simple bumper and glass screen cover to retain more of what I like about my phone.
