The music of Charles Tomlinson Griffes may not be familiar to many people, but fine music of distictive beauty it is. This recording is a perfect way to get an introduction to his work. It is a splendid recording in terms of the perfect sound and performance. His music is influenced by composers such as Debussy,Ravel,Scriabin and Mussorgsky. Many of the pieces on this recording are piano pieces, fastidiously scored. The White Peacock has echoes of Stravinsky and the Firebird. Clouds is an impressionistic piece. And the Three Poems of Fiona McCleod are impressive with Celtic twists. Then there is the three tone pictures which has picturesque details of harmony and melody. Also on this recording is the wonderful Poem for Flute and Orchestra which has a Delius like flow. Finally the Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan is exciting, and is the longest piece on this set.
Conductor Joan Falletta is engaged throughout these works. There are also Solos delivered by many of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra players.
Griffes represents a high point in American Post Romanticism. He had a passion for verse and almost all these orchestral scores are linked to poetic or literary ideas.
Griffins only lived to the age of 35 and in that time produced some unique work.
This recording is an important document of his work and is decently recorded with a wide dynamic range and I highly reccomend this revelatory disc.

I agree entirely with the five-star reviews of the orchestral works on this disc. Finely played and ably directed. What makes this a four-star rating for me is the excessive vibrato used by Barbara Quintiliani. When we have such an exquisitely lyrical composer like Griffes there should be every attempt to sing what he writes. I'm sure the melody of the songs would have been beautiful if more purely sung - instead of which I found myself trying to make some interpolative judgement of what the notes might have been between the wide gap of upper and lower pitches of the vibrato. Disappointing.

Like the previous reviewer, I found this an extraordinary disc. While it shows the influence of french music in the Debussian vein mixed with American influences of Ives, it manages to go beyond pastiche. Griffes was a unique talent, dying at an early age. His music moves from the tender to the awesome: Kubla Khan expressing a powerful response to the Colleridge poem, reaching two great crescendos that take your breath away. The White Peacock represents the softer side, but with similar intocicating qualities. A pity Falleta did not record the full four movements of the suite from which this piece derives: The Roman Suite, a memoir of Griffes' visit to Rome. The other pieces similarly make a good case for this composer. A pretty good recording, full and satifying. A fine bargain. Faletta and the Buffalo orchestra are turning out to some superb productions. She is a conductor to watch out for, and is building a solid reputation that is going somewhere quite special.

Charles Griffes is one of the best impressionistic composers I've come ac cross. I can't believe how unknown he is! This album features some absolutely stunning recordings, very passionate. Some of the use of rubato may not be for everyone but I think it's great
