At this price, a box with that many CD's could not contain high quality music, right? Well, that's what I thought, but pianist Hakon Austbo is ready to prove me wrong. He's able to convey the wildly differing emotions within each piece with what seems like a natural talent for atmosphere and setting. From the cozy and quiet to the wildly impressive and stormy, he does it convincingly. On top of that he adds lots of little technical quirks, like playing certain melodies in a slurring way, or adding slight breaks for comic effect. This technicality does not detract from the works themselves, but works to highlight the character of the pieces. Basically I'm stunned by what I hear, and I think Austbo cannot receive enough accolades for this marvelous body of works. On top of that the recording quality is perfectly adequate. I personally think that the sound lacks a little body, but on the other hand it is intricately detailed and sophisticated. A lighter piano sound if you wish. But I really don't think this slight deficiency in the recording quality will hold anyone back from what, to me, is a stellar performance of these fascinating piano miniatures.

I listened to the MP3 samples and decided to invest in the 7 CD box set. Excellent recording of some very nice pieces. The soloist is first class and the recording quality is also excellent in true Brilliant Classics fashion. Recommended.

Austbo is a wonderful pianist in this set, always alive to the quick changing moods of Grieg's miniatures, and with the rhythmic drive so often needed in Grieg's music. I have been playing through this constantly since it arrived, with much pleasure. Unbelievable value.

Grieg in general is a tuneful, quiet composer will plenty of melodies and these discs are no exception. The music flows from one track to the next and are somehow "different" than offerings from other prominent composers.
