"The Grid provides you with a simple way to look at the complex system which is your business. With the possible exception of Warren Buffett, everyone needs to read this book." (Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman, Ogilvy Group)
"The Grid provides a systematic framework for looking at virtually all the critical aspects of your business, and maybe more valuable, at how each affects the others. It'll be a rare reader who doesn't come away with fresh, useful insights into his or her enterprise." (Walter Kiechel III, author of The Lords of Strategy)
"Matt Watkinson distils strategic know-how into nine ingenious perspectives and, with the use of clever examples, shows us how to apply this technique of thinking to any business problem or market opportunity. An extraordinarily powerful book." (Dr Jules Goddard, author of Uncommon Sense, Common Nonsense)
"The Grid presents a unique, joined up approach to decision-making, revealing both the holistic nature of business and all the key elements a business must consider. Following the tenets of this book will help readers to avoid the costly unintended consequences that can follow on from well-intended decisions. I can safely say that if you only read one business book in your life it should be The Grid." (Philip Rowley, Chief Financial Officer, Sony Pictures Entertainment)

Therefore, as someone who now manages two businesses and leads numerous projects each year, I was thrilled to pick up his latest endeavour. As I worked through the book I found myself nodding along to common problems so many of my projects have faced, which of course I'd never really considered - because it's 'not my job', and because I didn't have a good enough understanding to be able to.
I think that many people reading this book will find that there's one or two chapters that they know well, and the remaining chapters a fascinating and informative look into all of the other component parts that make up both projects and business ventures. I finished my first read-through already with actions in mind as to how I could improve my business operations, and am now referring back to the appropriate chapters to guide my way through implementation - as well as recommending this to the rest of the board!
To conclude, I would recommend - and I have been recommending - this book to anyone in any role on any project. While incredibly useful for anyone trying to run a business (large or small), it's also fantastic to help you consider, and support, all the other puzzle pieces that need to fall into place for a successful project.
These individual areas will be familiar to anyone who has undertaken strategy analysis before: indeed, some such as bargaining power and intra-firm rivalry can be mapped directly to equivalents on a Five Forces analysis. Where I found the framework particularly valuable is in adding explicit sections on consumer desires and the adaptability of the business. The book begins with an overview of the framework and then examines each section in detail. Throughout there is an emphasis on using the framework to see the interconnectedness of these factors and the organisation as a whole. Valuably there is also a downloadable resource pack on the author's website which includes well-designed guides, worksheets and customisable Powerpoint templates, removing one of the main points of friction in adopting something new.
The Grid meets a major requirement for me in being simple to grasp but capturing a great deal of detail. It would be easily applicable to any startup, established organisation or business unit. I really can't recommend it highly enough.
The writing style makes for an easy read, and you'll forget you're learning complicated stuff until a few days later when something that's baffled you for years finally makes sense. It's a quick read (8 hours from start to finish for me) that you can dip in and out of once you understand the model.
I keep my Kindle handy so that I can bone up before making decisions. Highly recommended.
I'm delighted by how useful The Grid is as a model. I find myself mentally filling boxes in as I think through things at work.
Matt has a wonderful writing style, & takes you on a whistle stop tour of business peppered with interesting examples.
For me, a couple of chapters were stand out, either because I was in need of help or because it was a passion topic of mine.
Definitely worth reading at least 3 times!
