Having received this as a fathers days present (sorry Mr Adamson) on top of getting the brilliant 4 disc set DVD set for Christmas (which can actually be played in car as a soundtrack) I thought I might venture a couple of comments and a corrective. It would be a thrill for example to have proper CD versions of a huge number of the live tracks from that DVD (and more from the vaults) since as evidenced on this compilation the storming live versions of "Because the night" by Patti Smith and Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" really stand out. On the DVD there are brilliant performances by Nils Lofgren "Goin' back", Robert Wyatt's "Shipbuilding", XTC's "Statute of Liberty", Roxy Music "Ladytron" and an ever so fragile version of Janis Ian's "At seventeen" which all demand full and proper exposure. It is a joy in addition to have for posterity the late great Judie Sill's performance of "The Kiss" while on the other end of the spectrum is there a performance that so radiates what rock n roll should be about than Springsteen's epic "Rosalita"? Perhaps the understandable if over hostile reaction to this CD from some quarters leads to some reconsideration of a proper release of these performances in a high quality CD format then good will have come from what has emerged on a limited number of Amazon reviews as a completely over the top debate?

Indeed this compilation is by no means the disaster that some Amazon reviewers are claiming, hence while the majority of these songs are not from the show they do represent the feel and type of the Whistle Test particularly in its early days (where else would you now hear J D Souther or Curved Air for example?).

This album is a disapointment, you would expect an album called The Old Grey Whistle Test to have music that was actually played on the programme live in the studio, but this is just tracks from the artists albums which most people with any interest in this music would have already.

It was pretty obvious from reading the track-listing that few of the tracks were from the shows. I have many of the the tracks but there were enough I didn't have to make me buy it, and there isn't really a duff entry on it. I'd prefer to have had the actual performances (with maybe a different Van Morrison and John Martyn track - one can hear even great songs too often) but this will probably sit in my car helping the miles fly by. The music is good - what's to complain about? Three stars because of the lack of originality.

With the title being so clearly Whistle Test, I would expect this to be recordings from the show. Huge dissappointment. Whilst the listing here on Amazon clearly shows these tracks to be from the respective albums (or wherever = THANK YOU AMAZON) I find it bizzarre that the legend that is Whilst test and Whispering Bob would lend their name to this compilation.
Save your money or buy the Whistle test DVD's and watch some of these artists in the Whistle Test Studio playing live. MAGIC.

This is nothing but a shoddy compilation album of well-worn tracks that most people will have anyway, strung together because the artists just happened to have appeared on the OGWT
Another con from the industry desperately trying to flece the public. And there was Bob harris on jools holland the other week endorsing it. shame on you bob

I was about to buy this CD then I read the reviews.
the positive ones for once were of no use at all.
The negative ones put me straight.
With the greatest of respect I honestly think that if the object was to present a set of good tracks then full credit.
What I am amazed, nay disgusted, at is they are released under the banner of the Old Grey Whistle Test.
The fact that only two of the tracks are from the show is insulting to say the least. It's akin to buying those cheap as chips, greatest hits CDs of a group only to see the little asterisk to say that they are live re recordings of the group and done bye by an entirely different vocalist and line up with only the banjo player as an original member.Beware, this CD is not as the viewer first things a selection of live takes from the brilliant OGWT but tracks of artists associated with them.
To add insult to injury only two of the tracks are in fact live cuts from the show.
Now why release the CD?
Granted that the selection is a pleasing one with a combination you wouldn't find elsewhere BUT it's not what the majority of punters want and expect from the brand name Old Grey Whistle Test is it?
I and I imagine many others want a selection of live cuts similar to the excellent DVD of OGWT. or
if you're going to have a selection of tracks with the OGWT banner at least have the decency to let them be tracks that were actually played and featured on the show which introduced us to some fine music.
I'm thinking of City of Tiny Lights by Frank Zappa, Tubler Bells by Mike Oldfield and Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh for example.
