The film sticks closely to the latest version with Abin Sur, Sinistro and the Core - the plot is familiar to anyone who has read the latest series Secret Origin (Green Lantern) .
This Blu Ray package has 3 discs - with extended versions and a good sprinkling of extras. I watched the 3D version and there are long periods where 3D is not relevant and the plot does sag a bit in the middle when there is a lot of dialogue and not much visual interest.
3D takes over for the spectacular alien landscapes, which look truly stunning and the set-piece battles - where things are hurtling about and we are in the air a lot. Mostly the 3D gives depth and shows you background layers - but there are moments when things come towards you - like when the ring is sent out by Abin Sur to find the next Green Lantern - it feels like the green sphere is coming right at you!
3D also adds to the effect of the Lantern costumes, where you can see light rippling and depth is added. The green 'constructs' also stand out as a concept that is particularly suiited to 3D enhancement. The most prominent 3D was actually in the closing titles - where the designers really played with the effects and matched this with the Dolby 5.1 surround soundtrack, which moved sounds around you, to follow the visuals. The hint of a sequel was also intriguing and may make a better film, beyond the obligatory "origin" backstory.
All in all - not a bad film and a nice addition to the list of 3D Blu Rays, where something is added to the experience. Worth buying and a very high quality transfer.
I was happy to rent it out. The price was very cheap to do so and you had 3 days to watch it and 48hrs from when playing it!!
I recommend renting/buying this film - MattSnape11 :)
The Green Lantern, for those of you who don't know, is essentially one of 3600 galactic beat cops. His allocated precinct is space sector 2814 (our solar system), his perpetually annoyed bosses are blue, super-intelligent Oompah Loompahs called Guardians and his trusty sidearm is a power ring. Now, this ring is fuelled by willpower and, along with a rather nifty Green Lantern costume and the power of flight, this also means that whatever the owner wills into existence can be created and deployed; weapons, tools, shields, rockets and so on. So far, so good but the ring has two major flaws. Firstly, it needs to be charged, so each Green Lantern is issued with an actual green lantern that acts as a power battery. Secondly, the green power of will is ineffective against yellow. This potentially means our hero can be undone by a strategically-placed banana skin but we'll get onto that later.
Casting choices aside (I really didn't like Ryan Reynolds being Hal Jordan), I think the biggest flaw was one of scope. When you have a character that goes back over 60 years and a mythology that covers thousands of years, you really need to decide on where your focus lies; the personal or the epic? Now, the film establishes the universe of the Green Lantern very efficiently in the opening minutes and tells us how Abin Sur (the original Lantern of sector 2814) defeated and imprisoned Parallax on the planet Ryut. Parallax is the living embodiment of fear (signified by the colour yellow) and looks suspiciously like a Guardian, although why this is the case is never really explained in the film. For anyone who follows the comic, this seems like a hybridisation of two distinct storylines: Krona, the renegade Guardian with Parallax and this pick `n' mix approach to the mythology pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the film. Once again, it seems like we're back in the bad old days of studio interference and creative control going to the executives. All credit is due to Mark Strong as Sinestro, a veteran Green Lantern who ultimately succumbs to fear and will later become Hal Jordan's greatest enemy and Blake Lively as Carol Ferris (the spunky female/love interest). Poor old Peter Sarsgaard struggles as shy loser turned villain Hector Hammond simply because he's so much more of a sympathetic character than the perma-smugging Hal Jordan. Besides, any parent who employs an alliterative naming approach must know their child is doomed to a life of super villainy (Lex Luthor anyone?).
Rather than attempt to tackle two quite hefty storylines by squashing them together and doing neither justice, I would have preferred that the story of the Manhunters be told. The Manhunters were the prototype Green Lanterns; a robotic police force created by the Guardians, who then later malfunctioned and massacred entire sectors before being stopped. Some survived and disappeared and the Guardians then did what anyone would do in a similar situation and covered it up. This would have made a much simpler introduction to the universe of the Green Lantern and would've established the "we're only human" theme that Martin Campbell's film constantly returns to. As it is, the film has a seemingly cross-eyed Reynolds smarming his way across the galaxy before having a crisis of confidence. Hector Hammond's head looks increasingly like a King Edward potato as his powers manifest while Sinestro and the rest of the Lanterns flounder on the sidelines. The final showdown, however, between Hal Jordan and Parallax is fantastic and does give some indication as to what could be done with this character should a sequel be made.
Now, the more observant among you may notice that I made a point earlier about a banana skin but then failed to return to it. You were probably expecting a devastatingly witty explanation of the Green Lantern's one major weakness. Unfortunately, this was just a literal tease to leave you hanging and this, in essence, is precisely how the film itself feels; classic material that is seemingly not allowed to reach its natural conclusion either through laziness or neglect. The Blu-Ray version features an extended cut adding 14 minutes to the theatrical cut. I was hoping for some kind of additional narrative or depth but, unfortunately, most of this is taken up at the beginning with a young Hal Jordan and the somewhat inevitable loss of his test pilot father. Provided that the studio doesn't order a reboot, as is common these days when films "under-perform", Green Lantern 2 could turn things around and see the return of less angst-ridden superheroes to the big screen, in films that are meant to be a bit of escapist fun.
Is it a great film? No. It is, however, fun, entertaining and first-rate Saturday matinee-style fare. A little saggy due to the requirements of it being an origin movie and the exposition can be a little tedious at times, but i stress 'a LITTLE'.
Don't believe the internet (he says posting this viewpoint on the internet) and enjoy this for what it is.
