Decent performances of a somewhat bland work
on 15 October 2010 - Published on Amazon.com
Alexander Grechaninov (1864-1956) has gradually come to be known as one of the major voices of the Russian silver age, particularly, perhaps, because of the efforts of Polyansky and Chandos. There seems to be a certain agreement that his greatest efforts were made in the area of liturgical music, such as the much lauded All Night Vigil and the Passion Week. Much of it is, of course, a capella (the use of instruments is, at best, controversial in the Orthodox Churc, something Grechaninov had been complaining about), but the Liturgia Domestica is scored for soloist, chorus, small orchestra and organ. In fact, this is not the work's first recording - an apparently (I have not heard it) wonderful version is said to exist with Boris Christoff as the soloist. It is in any case a work containing many beautiful moments, from the gently meditative to the almost operatic. Yet Grechaninov's compositional language is limited - and more so than I find it to be in the other works of his I am familiar with. With the composer apparently deciding to go for sublime textures and slowly unfolding colors, there is for instance little distinguished melodic material here, and little to work with to achieve any cumulative effect. To be perfectly honest I found the whole thing to be a challenge to my patience. Maybe it helps if you are more religious than I am? I don't know. I will not fault the performances, even though I suspect it may be possible for a conductor to do a little more to avoid blandness (Polyansky is definitely rather slow). The chorus, however, is excellent and the instrumental performers seem for the most part to achieve the intended effects. In my opinion this would not be the place to start an exploration of Grechaninov's music, although if you are already familiar with, say, his Passion Week music I suppose you have an idea of what to expect. The recording is live and not always ideally balanced.

An Absolutely Beautiful Recording
on 24 December 2002 - Published on Amazon.com
My late brother was a terrific conductor of Russian liturgical music When he was in his early 20s he had the privilege of studying under the great Russian composer Alexander T. Grechaninov (1864 - 1956) who is noted mostly for his wonderful compositions of liturgical music. The use of instruments in the Orthodox Church is not allowed and I purchased this recording with fear and trepidation that I would be banished to hell for ever for listening to it. I am familiar with most of this music a capella. The addition of the organ and other instruments results in a most beautiful recording and expands an already fantastic choir into a new dimension. The Russian bassos are there in full force. Polyansky takes his time and squeezes out every note out of this gorgeous religious music. If you are lover of Russian liturgical music this recording is a must. It is worth going to hell listening to it. I would rank it against any service from Bach to Messiaen. It was recorded live and I wish they cut the applause at the end.
