Product description

Product Description

The new album 'The Greatest Video Game Music 2', again recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, features some new, exciting arrangements made by Andrew Skeet of some of the most beloved video game music tunes.

The aim is to cater to an ever increasing fan base, and bring the classical audience and the gaming community closer together. In the spirit of this, 3 of the tracks have been chosen by fans in a poll made by Gamer Magazines IGN and Kotaku. The polls got over 80 000 votes, and fans are excited to hear the new arrangements.

The first album; The Greatest Video Game Music, released in late 2011 featured classical renditions of the most famous and loved video game music, performed by London Philharmonic Orchestra. The album was massively successful, selling almost 100.000 copies worldwide. This makes it the bestselling video game music album of all time.

It may seem strange to want to listen to video game music but I enjoy soundtrack music to have on in the car or in the background and liked the first album, this one also offers a good variety of different tracks which simply sound great with the orchestral performance. At just £2.69 it's well worth a shot making it an easy five star recommendation.

My only disappointment is there's less very old music which has been re-interpreted, the tracks I found most entertaining on the original album were the ones taken from the old 8-but or 16-bit days which had been converted from a simple midi to a complex orchestral arrangement. The newer music tracks don't work as well due to the originals being very high quality already as some of the music production on the current generation consoles is extremely good, in particular track 14 'Icarus' from Deus Ex: Human Revolution sounds like a poor copy of the stunning original and I'm not that keen on their choice of Halo tracks nor the mix they have used. I'm not convinced about the choice of the infamous Still Alive track from Portal either as it's quite a quirky track that worked well in its original form, it sounds a bit strange with a female singer trying to match the voice of the computer AI that sings the original.

Then again, for those that haven't come across the originals of some of these tracks it's probably a good introduction and certainly for those who haven't heard the Icarus track I'd highly recommend seeking out the original. Also I was surprised by the Arkham City track as I'd play the game but never really noticed the music however on this album it's one of my favourites.

Saw a review of this album in the "classical" charts on a competitor music store. Soooo much cheaper on Amazon and an absolute bargain at this price. Stunning arrangements, beautiful sweeping scores. Put the title of this album out your mind and just listen - Its wonderfull and certainly NOT just for games buffs.

One of the best compilations of orchestral music i've ever heard on a single album. Period.

That is all that needs to be said.

100% recommended to buy this!

I quite enjoyed the "The Greatest Video Game Music" so when I saw they released a second, I downloaded it straight away. Most of the tracks on the album are pretty much the same from the first album. There's your typical Zelda track, a Halo track etc. But then there's a couple of interesting new ones. The Chrono Trigger theme brought back fond memories and I loved the operatic version of Still Alive.

If you've not got the first album, I'd choose that over this one but it's still worth having in your collection.

This music is brilliant. The classical scores are spot on and are fantastic to relax to. Video game music is far better than movie soundtracks as they are designed to be listened to as opposed to having the good bit sampled in the films. The atmosphere of some of these tracks is amazing. If you have played any of these games then buy this and find out what you've missed in the games you haven't.

(plus £2.50, you can't go wrong)

It's got a large number of tracks and most of them are very good, the only small disappointment I found was that they didn't do as many 'epic' songs as the first album, here there's more of a focus on the softer side of video game music. But obviously, personal preference. And that said, it's still all in my music collection.

Beautifully arranged music from a great selection of games. I was privileged to see the Video Game Heroes performance, so was delighted to get this and the 1st volume. It's hard to pick a standout track, as so many have emotional resonance already. Just get it!

Overall, a good selection but somewhat inconsistent in choice of tone and tempo, and limited range for the money. Still some good pieces and a much underrated niche of the score composition market.
