This appealing collection contains twenty tuneful songs from a band that deserved to have had greater success. Oh well, at least their demise gave us Eurythmics! There is depth, poetics & magic in their compositions and arrangements. Every track is special in its own way, from the sublime neo-psychedelic Blind Among The Flowers and the melancholic Loneliest Man In The World (from their first album) to the fast-paced I Only Want To Be With You and So Good To Be Back Home Again to the eerie excursion In The Morning When The Madness Has Faded which ends in a chilling howl (from the 2nd album Reality Effect).

There's more psychedelia in Angels & Demons, the pop is perfect on the aforementioned cover I Only Wanna Be With You and So You Want To Go Away Now (from the 3rd album Luminous Basement) whilst dub & reggae influences surface on Aint No Room. On certain tracks they have an almost Byrds-like sound with chiming, jangling guitars and soaring vocal harmonies. Although I like every single song, the following also deserve special mention: All Life's Tragedies, Don't Say I Told You So, Everywhere You Look & It Doesn't Have Be This Way.

There is one omission, Walls & Foundations, which makes their Luminous Basement album essential still; being a magnificent work, it is well worth seeking out for fans of Lennox & Stewart. They went on to release the highly experimental first Eurythmics album

OK, the Tourists were not the greatest band ever, but they deserved perhaps a little more traction in our memories than they have enjoyed.
I was looking to buy "The Reality Effect" which my sister had owned back in my youth.
There were some great tracks on that which I could barely remember and I wanted to get re-acquainted with them.
To be honest, this is an even better offering since it seemingly contains everything of note from that and their other album.
I bought it on the strength of other reviews, and glad I did.
Not everything here is a killer (imho) but there are plenty of nice surprises for anyone who only recalls "So Good to be Back Home Again"
Annie Lennox went on to greater things of course, and this band should be allowed out of her shadow once in a while.

There are several songs (mainly the early stuff) that I can't say that I remember, but in the main the songs on the CD are brilliant and I wish that there was more music being made today of this quality.
If you liked The Stranglers, The Who or Roxy Music, you'll find a few songs that have a similar sound - and plenty that don't.
If you liked All About Eve, this CD will show you where AAE got their basic direction.
If you were / are a fan of the Eurythmics, then you won't be disappointed with this CD; Annie's and Dave's talents are just as apparent as in the best that they have done since.

I first saw The Tourists when they backed Roxy Music in 1979. I liked their melodies and jangling guitars and ultimately, bought the first two albums. Both were very listenable without being mind blowing. Some tracks (Blind Among The Flowers) really stood out, while others were pretty cringeworthy (So Good to be Back Home Again). Sold all my vinyl many years ago and recently thought I'd look up the two Tourists albums on CD. I can find Reality Effect but not the first album which doesn't appear to be available on CD.

Most of the best tracks appear to be on this Greatest Hits album: Blind Among the Flowers, Deadly Kiss, Another English Day but I'm disappointed that In My Mind There's Sorrow is not on there, which was one of my favourite tracks. I guess I may just download my favourite tracks if I can. Generally, I preferred Annie Lennox on vocals as Pete Coombe's inability to pronounce his 'Rs' did grate somewhat but In My Mind was a beautiful song!

I was shocked to learn of the death of Pete Coombes in the late 90s. RIP mate. I'll raise a glass to you when I give your songs a listen again.

Lots of stuff you might only listen to once, but worth every penny for "Blind among the flowers"; "So good to be back home again" and of course "I only wanna be with you".

Please play the previews and judge for yourself.

Is there a better intro to a song than blind among the flowers?
The Tourists made 3 good studio albums but never quite got the credit they deserved.

Shame their earlier CDs are so hard to get hold of. Time to re-issue I think.

Back in 1979 I fell in love with The Tourists single 'The Loneliest Man In The World' and even now think it should have been a much bigger hit than it was. A great song, it has great lyrics, punch and melancholy in abundance. Problem is, as I found out back in those days when I bought their debut album, not many of the bands other songs come even close to that quality. Sure, there are other great tracks on this cd (first single ' Blind Among The Flowers', 'All Life's Tragedies' and the other 'hits') but they are surrounded by a plethora of very mediocre 'guitar, bass and drums rock' that lacks punch direction or melody and simply fails to stand out from the crowd. Annie Lennox's voice sounds best here when she is given lead vocals and the tracks are built around her. On other tracks she simply sounds 'ghostly' and on most of the tracks where lead vocals are shared the band sound weak and lifeless. I can't say that the sound quality is overly good on this collection so that doesn't help much either. Fans of the band will however be delighted that this cd includes the two tracks from the free single given away with the groups last album 'Luminous Basement' namely "From The Middle Room' (an experimental instrumental) and 'Strange Sky'. If you don't own any of the groups hits (especially T L M I T W) then I wouldn't put you off this but for me it's a 5 out of 10 release.
