This CD is a significantly expanded 1986 version of Tomita's already brilliant first Greatest Hits album, released back in 1979. For any fan of electronic instrumental music this album is a must. This package is a fantastic introduction to a man who is one of the few to truely explore the full potential of synthesisers in their infancy and is, as such, one of the godfather's of electronic music. Tomita's speciality is to use the limitless versatility of electronic instruments to bring to life pieces originally written for orchestra. He does this by crafting atmospheres and sounds in an effort to conjure up images in the mind's eye....To bring the composer's dreams to life. The Infernal Dance from "The Firebird" ballet truely sounds like a dance through Hell, the robot voices of "Star Wars" give it a dated but naive charm. Amongst many extremely strong tracks my favourite track is Tomita's interpretation of Prokofiev's 5th Symphony in which he summons up aliens darting about their underwater UFO in the Bermuda Triangle. If a more powerful and beautiful piece of synthesised classical music exists then I'll eat my entire record collection!

This seems to be a fair enough compliation, with a little bit of this and that from some of Tomita's best works, but for me, it leaves a few questions unanswered.

Firstly Tomita's works are to a grand scale with good coherence from beginning to end, from prelude to finale. He carries themes and sounds through an album in sympathy with the manner in which composers carried themes and style through their complete pieces. To then dissasemble these ideas from one another and worse still patch them together with other pieces and different styles seems to miss the point a little - like a "greatest guitar riffs of the 20th century CD" which contained 20 seconds of smoke on the water followed by 20 seconds of voodoo chile.

The joy of sitting down to a complete 40 minutes of Tomita's fine arrangement is the joy of this kind of endevour. It no doubt took him countless hours with tape machines plugging his synth parts together one by one in contrast to more modern digital techniques. The advantage of this painstaking labour, is that every single layer of sound and every single note is accouted for and considered. No sound just ends up on the track. Everything is deliberate.

Tomita's albums can virtually all be found in most second hand record shops for between 1 and 4 pounds sterling. So stop and ask yourself. Is this really what I want to spend £14 on when I could be getting the un-abridged joy of 3,4 or 5 full Tomita Albums. Just ask yourself - that's all.

Isao Tomita who arranged classical music for his passion to synthesizers was so different that as a youth who has all his life been captivated by classical works. I had them on vinyl and later compact cassettes but by constantly playing the they wore out, This along with other cd's of his music will hopefully last for my remaining years. Terrific and available from Amazon.co.uk

This guy is brilliant, I grew up with his music, and still play it today. He's worth more than five stars, but that's the limit.

The ultimate synth music, Fantastic compositions that sound as good as an orchestra playing, so easy to listen and loose yourself in. Recommend to anyone.
