"Greatest Hits" (12 tracks; 33 min.) is the umpteenth compilation showcasing one of the greatest American bands ever, so let us dive straight into the merits of this release: the music is obviously 5 stars, not a single weak song on here. That said, there is nothing new here, except perhaps that "Born On the Bayou" is brought somewhat unusually in its 1969 single release, meaning: shorter than the album track, and in mono. Hence my rating of 1 star (instead of zero stars) for new relevance. If the single edit of "Born On the Bayou" is sufficient for you to get this compilation, by all means go for it. Had this compilation been release at a price commensurate with its short running time, say half of what it is listed for, I might have understood the thinking behind this release. But no, it is being sold at the price of a regular album. From the value-for-money perspective, I am rating this zero stars.
Compare this "Greatest Hits" compilation to the classic (and still best, in my opinion) CCR compilation from 1976, "Chronicle, Vol. 1" (20 tracks; 68 min.): 10 of the new "Greatest Hits" compilation's tracks are also on Chronicle Vol. 1, and then you get another 10 tracks "for free" so to speak, since both these compilations sell for pretty much the same price. I mean, when you are given that choice, why would anyone choose this "Greatest Hits" over "Chronicle, Vol. 1"? I can't phantom there is any good reason for this latest CCR compilation (other than the record label (Fantasy) hoping to squeeze out a few more bucks from any misinformed unsuspecting shopper). Bottom line: BUYER BEWARE!
It would've made sense if this was the first compilation album to come out after the band broke up, Back in the days where you could only use vinyls and Cassette tapes to listen to music and you had to buy the whole album to get the songs you wanted. But otherwise, there is no point for this pathetic small collection to be released.
If you want to have all these songs, but you're not quite ready to spend money on all the bands albums yet, then buy the Chronicle Vol. 1 CD and a download of the Full Version of Born On The Bayou.
