Whether it be dominance, astounding skills or changing the nature of their sport, in some cases even defining a time, this series offers a unique insight into the motivations, achievements and personalities that put these athletes amongst the greatest of all time. From Nadia Comaneci, the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect ten, to the legendary Carl Lewis who won four golds in the 1984 Los Angeles games, these famous names have left their mark upon the sporting world. Also included are fascinating insights into the careers of 400m hurdles hall-of-famer Ed Moses, perhaps the greatest distance runner of alltime Haile Gabreselassie and pole-vaulting maestro Sergey Bubka. Plus, there are in-depth profiles of the incomparable Michael Johnson and Usain Bolt, two undoubted legends of the track. Complete with exclusive interviews, footage and unique access, these programmes create a full picture of a group of men and women who have changed the face of sport.

This collection is without doubt the best obtainable documentary coverage I have seen of the above athletes and their careers, excluding only TV-exclusive documentaries such as the BBC 2012 retrospective of famous Olympians. The biographies on the DVDs do a great job of balanced interviews with the stars themselves (where possible), coaches, colleagues, rivals and other competitors or current athletes inspired by those being discussed. A major plus is the amount of unseen footage of most individuals within; especially early videos of Nadia Comăneci in training. All the biographies are well-researched in the main, and with much more respectable production value than these sorts of sporting documentaries usually exhibit. I found all the stories very interesting, with some especially absorbing; in particular the lengthy and well-deserved appraisal of Carl Lewis and the fascinating political background to Heike Dreschler's circumstances competing as an East German athlete, pre- and post-1989. And although Nadia Comăneci is the only non track and field star represented in these DVDs, her story is equally engaging.Read more ›
