Review

This detailed history shows just how the GWR earned its moniker, 'God's Wonderful Railway'. A choice book on perhaps the best loved and most publicised transport system in the world.

Inevitably, a book covering 150 years of any major industrial or commercial organisation is going to be superficial in places. That said, this is a very creditable effort at peering into the nooks and crannies of "God's Wonderful Railway." It's quite profusely illustrated and worth the price for that alone.

The first reviewer is correct to imply that this volume is not a detailed history of the Great Western Railway. There are numerous detailed compilations relating to the history of the GWR, probably more than for any of the other pre- nationalisation and pre-grouping railway systems in the UK. For detailed study there is the three-volume history by MacDermot and Clinker and a final volume by Nock. Mr Nock also wrote a two-volume work "The Great Western Railway in the 19th Century" and a follow-on book covering the 20th Century up to 1948 and nationalisation.
However this book produced under the editorship of Patrick Whitehouse and David St John Thomas is a worthwhile addition to any enthusiasts bookshelf, and is worth the purchase price alone for the images of broad guage trains at speed, and a number of 1930's colour images. A book that you can pick up and dip into rather than requiring serious study, but is certainly not a "coffee-table" book!
The formative years and the broad guage era are well covered, together with locomotives and locomotive construction, passenger and freight operation, publicity, wartime, signalling including automatic train control, and the GWR's pioneering forays into other modes of transport, to list just some of the chapters.

A well-written and edited volume, as indeed are the other three companion volumes, LMS 150, SR 150, and LNER 150.

My boyfriend introduced me to what he called "puffer trains", the Great Western being his favourite.
This is a beautiful, comprehensive book with a wealth of illustrations.
Highly recommended!!!!

What I've read of this book so far, which is why I've only clicked 4 stars, is an amazing story of the GWR, and very well written. You can't go far wrong if this is the only GWR history book you buy!
