However this book produced under the editorship of Patrick Whitehouse and David St John Thomas is a worthwhile addition to any enthusiasts bookshelf, and is worth the purchase price alone for the images of broad guage trains at speed, and a number of 1930's colour images. A book that you can pick up and dip into rather than requiring serious study, but is certainly not a "coffee-table" book!
The formative years and the broad guage era are well covered, together with locomotives and locomotive construction, passenger and freight operation, publicity, wartime, signalling including automatic train control, and the GWR's pioneering forays into other modes of transport, to list just some of the chapters.
A well-written and edited volume, as indeed are the other three companion volumes, LMS 150, SR 150, and LNER 150.
This is a beautiful, comprehensive book with a wealth of illustrations.
